Summary:
First of all: I use the Amplifier as a decoder and rear-channel amplifier only. I have a Rotel RC990BX pre-amplifier and two Rotel RB990BX power-amps that I use to drive my main speakers (Avalon, bi-amped). The DVD is a Pioneer DP525.

I compared the surround qualities of this amplifier with those of a Sony receiver, a technics SA500 decoder with a Rotel RB956BX amp and the above mentioned Yamaha combination. My only concern was sound-quality. The Yamaha Tri-Field decoding (simulated acoustics) beats any other system if you like ambiance and spatial clarity. For me nothing else compares. I do think though that the subtlety of this feature is for audiophiles with really good systems only. The decoding could be better (it has a littlebit of sharpness in the midrange now and then), but you'll have to pay serious money to beat this Yamaha on this feature.

Strengths:
Best 5.1 decoding available (for normal money), Tri-Field is really something else. Simpel and easy.

Weaknesses:
Tri-Field / DTS decodering not available as seperate package.
