Summary:
Not too many out there anymore. I was looking for an amp about a year ago and came across this beauty at a used-audio market.(For 150 euro it was quite a steal anyway). This little monster is great. Build : It's built and weighs like a tank. At the back there is a large heatsink (kind of rough though)the inputs/outputs and speaker posts facing up. The knobs are great to look and operate (no plastic here) and the overall looks with the black fascia is great. Minor complaint, the power cord is fixed and could be better. Anyway it can be replaced easily. Features: It's full of controls (2 muting options, filters, loudness and triple!! tone controls (bass,mid,treble) to experiment with. Still I think the most neutral sound comes all filters and tones off. It also comes with 2Aux, 2(!) Phono Inputs(MM/MC),Tuner,and 2 tape and a headphone output. By the way there are two speaker sets. Since there was no manual I am not quite sure about the output but I believe it to be rated at about 60-75W. Sound: The sound is clean, realistic , full of rythm never edgy or harsh but without becoming blury or lean. Quite a piece of work. A friend of mine owns a Sansui QRX6500 receiver (which as I recalled sounded great despite its years) and I really wanted to compare the sound so I had her to bring it over for a listen. What a friend (Ever tried to lift a Sansui?). All in all the sound is quite similar with main difference in power and presentation.While AU-7900 sounded more clean,detailed , the QRX6500 sounded warmer, rounder but less analytical though (not foggy). I wonder if the QRX's wooden cabinet has anything to do with that. AU-7900's cabinet is completely metalic.What they do have in common is how great music they both play.(Still I'll miss the reciever part). Sum up: Great amp at a no cost price.Don't think twice, if you find one that is.. Summary:
This seperate but still togheter combination of a parametrical equelized pre-amp and amp is a beauty to look and listen to. The 2x150 watt mosfet block has power enough to drive some serious speakers. The overbuild powersupply with two huge elco's has no problem dealing with low impededances. The machine runs stable at a two ohm load.
The soundquality is outstanding compared to the sony receiver at my parents house. The speakers, a pare of missions, came alive! I didn't know that the missions could produce such a high bassoutput. But in compare with my onkyo dual monoblock the amp lacks reality. The Onkyo produces the sound more clearly with more dynamics and closer to the record. The sansui tends to overdo the highs and lows but you can easily solve this problems by turning one of the twenty tonecontrol knobs. Outstanding performer in all conditions despite the incredible heatproduction (after an hour of playing don't even think of putting your hand on the heatsink)

Summary:
I rate the 1970's Sansui products as having very high sound quality, good looks, and durability. The AU-7900 is a shining example of these qualities. It has 176 watts of power(it can blow the roof off the house!), flexible tone controls (Bass, Midrange, Treble). There are not a lot of amps on the market that have midrange control. There are tone and filter controls (Low filters are 20Hz and 60Hz and High filter switches are 12kHz and 7kHz) also for bass and treble, Loudness/muting switch, mode switch(mono, normal, reverse). There are 2 phono, tape(includes switch for copying deck 1 to deck 2, vice versa), 2 auxiliary inputs (for CD/VCR,etc) and 1 tuner input. There are also 2 sets of speaker inputs (A&B). Our family uses this amp to hear sound from videotapes when you hook up the VCR. It's pretty powerful especially when you have two set of speakers (use it to watch some action movies or even sci-fi when you hook your VCR audio outputs to the amp). We have had this amp for over 15 years, I grew up with this amp and can't find one that beats it in terms of sound versatility.
