Bottom Line: Bought this Sansui AU-417 from an estate sale. Very impressed with the sound. Smooth and tubey. Most of my amps are tube based except this one, I keep it cos the phono stage is fantastic.
I have heard other Sansui amps but this au series surprised me. My old impression of Sansui was bright and harsh. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for an amp that can drive most speakers with good sound.

Bottom Line: I purchased this item from craigslist for $50.00. Certainly does not disappoint. Very warm, almost sweet, well defined sound through Polk Monitor 10 A speakers (6 ohm). From jazz to metal. Very low volume to mid-hi no distortion never clips. If you can snag one of these for aboput a hundred + shipping, DO IT! I own several Sansui amps and receivers Au series: 7900,7700(2),5900(2), 555A etc . Model 8, G 5500, 5500(2), 4000, 2000X ,etc. All are Sansui-sweet.

Bottom Line: This old dinosaur won't die! I have used this amp nearly everyday since I bought it new in May, 1979. I have never had any trouble with it and have never even bothered to take the cover off and dust it! It has powered Cervin Vegas, Infinitys over the years and now is pushing four NS-A638 Yamahas in a small room. Rated at 65 watts per channel with .025 thd from a direct coupled supply this old Sansui is a near ideal match for those of us who appreciate small to medium sized power effecient speakers. Cosmetically it is clean, understated piece of equipment that reflects the design style of the late 70's. Dressed in all black with white lettering it catches the eye with its simplicity of design and lack of fluff. The only non black and white aspect of the face of the amp is the red power light located on the left just above the on-off switch. Typically, it has the "big power knob" Sansui was (an is!) famous for. It is an older design style that still proves it is a major player after all these years each time I power it up.
My AU-417 supports a JVC XL-Z431 cd player, a Sony ST-JX3 servo locked tuner, a Sony PSL-X4 direct drive Quartz Lock turntable with an Audio Technica cartridge and a Technics RS-TR373 dual cassette deck.
