Bottom Line:
Superb audio amplifier with more power than my ears can stand, so never have to play near its limits. Denon are well known for under rating their amplifiers, and this one is no exception. Regarding the "speed" of the amplfier, I can only ask "How fast do you throw them?."
Electric current drives speaker coils, it's basic physics. The PMA 1080 is Optical Class A output with loads of current drive, so that's what makes those coils go!
If you're lucky enough to pick up a second hand one, and by that I mean ANY of the PMA range, you'll get fantastic bang for buck.

Love the Denon amp, just love it :O)

Bottom Line:
Bought it new in 1995 or 1994 to replace my then 5 year old PMA-1560 even though the PMA-1080R was 45W per channel less. Ended up keeping both, but the 1080R is a little better, more musical and airy. A lot better than the Marantz PM-80mkII that I extensively compared both A to B at the store.
The Denon PMA-1080R is a powerful integrated amp of outstanding sound quality without any weak points. It handles all frequencies from the very low to the very high and everything between with impeccable control and authority without adding any coloration. Powerful, very fast, clear and transparent sound where everything is projected correctly. Absolutely no weak points in it.
Build quality is another big plus: Really well made all metal design that has aged well, and a fantastic remote control that gives you command of everything.
What an amp the PMA-1080R is!

Bottom Line:
I bought this amp back in 1992 after a great search. It was one of the best in the market and the only one that controlled amazingly the Jbl tlx18 of those days. The strength of this amp is the great speed and bass control without tonical errors. It serves me for almost 15 years without a problem. Made in Japan! Denon said that is 2x105W at 8ohms but I found on a German site that is 2x132W rms after measurments. So many years and I cannot find the weak point of it. I 'd tested with the B&W's 802D and it drives them in remarkable level of dbs without distortion. A GREAT ONE

Bottom Line:
Upgraded from a Luxman LV111 with this amp in 1996. It delivered big time - was like the Luxman had taken steroids and hit the gym hard.

The real strength of this amp is its firm grip on the bass and a very dynamic and lively presentation. Imaging is good but when compared to better stuff (I recently upgraded into a high end valve amp) it can sound a touch grainy and veiled.

Microdynamics are not its strength, but this baby was built for speed - rhythms come through really nicely.

All in all I would recommend this amp as fantastic value and a good choice for someone after power. It worked well as the main amp in a home cinema set up and the separate Record Out control is really handy.

This amp is now serving as a passive switchbox for all my sources before going into the valve amp. It only needs to be turned on if playing vinyl.

I am actually thinking about Bi-amping my system using this amp for the bass, and the valve amp for the treble.
