Simply an outstanding value. The MX-1 is rated by Yamaha itself as one of it's best all-time amps (google: 'Yamaha history of amps' and you will see it along side 4 of yamaha's all-time greatest signature amps). The MX-1 is overlooked as the exceptional amp that it is only because it was released at a time when demand for traditional two channel stereo was transitioning to digital surround entertainment systems and it's simple, sleek, presentation is not considered 'classic' by vintage enthusiasts. The MX-1 is an effortless preformer with a very natural and balanced musical presentation, never fatiguing. As with all great ams the MX-1 has it's own signature sound and is extremely well position for those who enjoy listening to high quality music throughout the day and love the convenience of volume control provided by using the remote. I currently own both tube and classic Vfet amps that are capable of greater transparency, broader sound stages etc. but on balance, reliability, ease of use, operating temperature and price you will be very hard pressed to best a MX-1 period! For a few hundred dollars a MX-1 can easily be recapped by your local stereo technician and you will experience a huge jump in its performance. Despite the presence of other prestigious amps in my home the Yamaha MX-1 will continue to anchor my daily sound system for years to come. The reasons are obvious to anyone who owns a Yamaha MX-1 amp, it plays beautiful music!

Bottom Line:
Definitely one of the best amps I've heard in the price range <2000€

I paid ~370€ (2010) and I'm very satisfied with my MX-1. It's married to an old-school NAD 1300 preamplifier and the sound is warm, crispy and very detailed. There is virtually NO noise or distortion. The MX-1 just needs to warm up to working temperature, half an hour or so, and the sound is really hi-end, no less. No matter how hard you push it, it never gets warmer. Due to bad crossovers and poor speaker placement I'm not in position to comment on the sound stage imaging capabilities, but I think it sounds very focused.

The MX-1 is a very powerful dual-mono amplifier capable of delivering more than 1200W for a short period, being stable below 2 ohm. It's capable of driving very large speakers. I would recommend it to anyone looking for less then av Electrocompaniet NEMO. I agree with people calling it a "rare whale". Anyone already owning one should hesitate buying a second one if they can.
