Price Paid:  $65.00 from ebay

Summary:
i bought this for $40 with $25 shipping without the remote. it works GREAT!!! i love the sound quality. My house AND my neighbors house shake using this baby!!!!! i have it hooked up to:
-zenith DVD
-rca 13" tv
-DLO zune music and video dock
-x2 KLH 250 watt speakers
-x2 sony 150 watt speakers

it works better than my old receiver and has a serious effect on cats outside. its great if you like the word LOUD!!

Strengths:
loud, strong, EASILY FIXABLE, durable, compatible with almost anything, adn it is just plain cool

Weaknesses:
distortion at extremely loud volumes, protector shows up if ANY wires make contact with ANYTHING metal other than the receiver. replacement remote is WICKED EXPENSIVE, its like $67.99!!!

Review 2 of 38

Price Paid:  $280.00 from Good Guys

Summary:
Well I am not pleased, the receiver has been serviced twice within the first 2 years of ownership. Just the other night while watching a DVD the system shut down and flashed "Protector" and of course it is out of warranty. I also have a Sony TV that is quirky and has on and off problems that go away on there own. I won't give Sony another shot. I am seriously considering Pioneer's VSX-D912K.

Strengths:
Price point for it's features.

Weaknesses:
Remote in controlling additional Sony Devices.

Review 3 of 38

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
Reciever has worked great for about 3 years. Just last week, it started flashing the word "Protector" and nothing would work. It was under extended warranty and I took it in. They replaced two transistors. I got it back today, hooked it up and guess what? I barely turn up the volume, it flashes the word "protector" and now I''m back to square one. I used to be quite an avid Sony supporter, but now I''m beginning to rethink my position, especially after reading numerous posts about other people with this problem. It sounds like it can never be fixed.

Strengths:
Good sound for home theatre. A bit outdated though.

Weaknesses:
Poor CD audio field selection.

Review 4 of 38

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
I bought a Sony STR-DE725 a few years ago and have had it to be fixed at least 10 times. If you go far past 3 on the volume bar, the stereo shuts down and flashes protector. Recently I hooked a digital cable from my DVD player to the receiver and now nothing on it will work. Has anyone else experienced this problem with this model?

Review 5 of 38

Price Paid:  $285.00 from Wards

Summary:
Two years ago, at this price, you couldn't come close to this receiver with any other brand. Now, it's a little behind because of no DTS. Although, it has great surround in Dolby! I'm glad we bought it, and would do it again! In our new system we're using a STR-DE1075. If it wasn't for DTS and 6.1 surround on our new receiver we wouldn't even consider replacing it! It's a great product and we've loved every minute of using it! The remote takes some patience, but it's worth the time 'cause it does everything. Optical inputs are where it starts to shine. If you're on a budget and Dolby Digital is fine for you...You can't go wrong with this receiver. Ours is flawless in that respect!

Strengths:
Great receiver, rivals many from higher price ranges, remote does everything except bring popcorn.

Weaknesses:
No DTS
