Strength:

Just picked this up used for $80. Very happy given its mint condition. I almost popped a kidney getting it to my car. Like my Pioneer VSX-59TXI (70 lbs), I wanted a receiver that was a bit older because I feel they were made to a bit higher quality at the time. This was the flagship for Onkyo, and thus far, it’s behaving like one. Immensely powerful and really nice sounding in two channel mode. It sounds a bit better than my Yamaha RXV-3800 which I thought is superb. Easy to setup and get it going. I’m using RBH MC series speakers. So, for $350, I have the Pioneer ($4k), Yamaha ($1.6k) and this Onkyo ($2k). Yea.......me.

Weakness:

Buggers really heavy.

This is one great Home Theatre Receiver and with the Tororidal power transformer, it delivers all the slam and finess you could ask for. At almost 55lbs this receiver is a hoss, place it on some heavy brass footers on a good 4" maple amp board and get your choice of higher end power cords and you are good to go.....sounds better than units costing 3x the price of the Onkyo 905 and that's the truth.

Strength:

Versatile with the ability to allow the receiver to calibrate and eq your speakers or for you to do it yourself. I wound up going with my on callibration but you don't have to. Gobs of power, well laid out remote. 4 HDMI inputs two outputs have reduced my cable clutter immensely. One cable from DVR/Cable box, one cable from Oppo DVD player, one cable out to LCD. It don't git no better. Well laid out manual very precise controls.

Weakness:

Price, clunky firmware upgrade procedure. Very difficult to do it yourself as far as firmware updates are concerned. Heavy, runs hot.

With the death of my old CRT (24 year old Mitsubishi oak cabineted monster) I decided to go the High Def/LCD route for a new TV downstairs. After much research and deliberation I wound up going with a 52" Samsung Series 6. My Onkyo 898, while still servicable, was getting a bit long in the tooth, I also wanted to clear up the rat's nest in back of the AV Rack. With this in mind I began looking at new model AV receivers. I'd used Yammies in the past but most of my receivers had been Onkyos since I got in to hT. I checked out the specs and decided to go with the then top of the line Onkyo 905.

I was going to go retail but found one NIB on the Bay, pulled the trigger and have been quite happy since. Of cours the 906 came out a month later but C'est La Vie.

Weakness:

Runs Warm.....no problem though

I've had the Onkyo TXNR 905 Receiver for about 3 months. I replace the power cord with a High end Power cord and installed a dedicated A/C line with Audiophile Wiring. I wanted to comment about the sound Quality.....simply put is very very good......as good as seperate amp/preamp I used to have. I'm using 5 MTM style speakers that are 4 OHMs and a pair of BIC DV62Si that are 8 OHM speakers(modified) for the rear channels of my 7.1 sound system. The Ampflier section of the 905 apears to be of high quality with the Torrodial Power Supply and seperate EL core transformers for the Video/processing. I haven't owened Denon or Yamaha so I can't comment on their sound quality......I'm very happy with the available power using the 5 MTM speakers that are 4 OHM. I wasn't sure if the 905 would be up to the task of driving the (5) 4 OHM MTM speakers but to my suprise.....I seem to have power to spare. I know that many of the Receivers are not capable of driving 4 OHM speaker Loads but the Onkyo TXNR 905 is definately capable and has very High Quality Sound to Boot.....so for the many that question if the 905 will drive 4 OHM speakers the answer is unequivaly yes..... not to worry! I won't name the Brand of Power cord I Purchased but I will say that it made a significant difference in sound quality...........as I purchased it with the 30 day money back guarantee and would not consider sending it back. I would advise other owners of the 905 that want higher quality sound to audition one of the higher end power cords available with the 30 Day Money back Guarantee and see what you think?

60 plus lbs
Torridial Transformer
Seperate power supplies
Bridgeable front channel
Ability to drive tough speaker loads
Ability to update firmware
Removeable power cord
Multiple THX surround & music modes
Ability to stream internet radio

Weakness:

Audio lag which is correctable via a DSP update

I upgraded from a Denon 3803 and I can't believe how much better this receiver drives my Klipsch RF 83's. The Denon seemed shallow, underpowered, dull, and lifeless. I knew I needed a receiver with a better power supply to drive the difficult load of the Klipsch which can dip down as low as 3.6 ohms.

This receiver has all/more features currently available in units costing twice as much. I love the HD Radio tuner and the ability to integrate both XM AND Sirius Satellite radio. The USB port and eathernet port give it a modern feel along with the ability to easily upgrade the firmware to add features and fix bugs.

Soundwise, this beast can't be beat. I love the weight and depth it gives to the soundstage. Everything is spot on soundwise. It has the ability to upconvert all soundtracks to full 7.1 glory, PLUS the ability to upconvert all video sources to 1080p using the best in class REON processor.

4 HDMI inputs plus 2 out (not at the same time), THX Ultra 2 certification, 140 x 7 WPC RMS, 1080p upscaling, HD Radio, this thing is packed with features that more expensive units just do not have. By far the best bang for the buck currently available.
