This is a review of the KR4600, the next generation model. It's mid-seventies vintage
and was toward the middle of the product line. The silver face with blue dial has
very clean styling - less ornate than the Pioneer or Sansui models. The wooden end
pieces are a nice touch too. Power is modest - about 30 wpc, I'd guess - but pair it
with efficient speakers and it will fill an average size room nicely. The best feature,
though, is it's upgradeable: it has preamp out/power in jacks! Just remove the jumpers
and you can add a separate power amp or easily connect a powered subwoofer
(all receivers and integrateds should have this feature). Perfect for the audiophile
on a tight budget.
These Kenwood receivers haven't caught on & are available dirt cheap. All mine
needed was the switches & pots cleaned and one bulb. For $21 I'd say this is one
of the great bargains out there. Recommended. Strengths:
>Preamp out/power in jacks- easy to upgrade.
>Existing amp sounds bigger than its modest rating.
>Clean, understated styling - neither industrial nor ornate.
>Phono input (MM), 2 tape monitors
>Outputs for 2 pr. of speakers
>Good analog tuner
>Not another ugly black box
>Price- collectors don't regard these as highly as the Kenwood integrated amps of
the period, let alone Marantz, Pioneer or Sansui receivers. Weaknesses:
>Spring clip speaker connectors- had to open up the holes to accept bare 16 ga.
speaker wire (back in the day 18 ga. was considered to be Monster Cable!)
>No remote, but to get this level of build quality a small price to pay. Besides, none
of the '70's receivers had one.
>Modest power, but it's easy to upgrade.
