Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
First of all : I do not have the model RX-DV5SL. I own the JVC RX-DV3SL. The only difference is the ability to use DVD-Audio. I write this because I want to react to the problem Bob has with his subwoofer. I had the same 'problem', but I could solve it by reading the manual. The JVC RX-DV5SL has plenty of settings. One of them is the ability to termine if you use large or small speakers for the fronts, center and rears. If you set them to 'Large' the major part of the low tones will be sent to the speakers instead of the the subwoofer. Setting all speakers to 'small' solves the 'problem'. Once you've set all the settings, this is a great system ! JVC RX-DV3SL JVC SX-XD33 (Matching Surround Speakers) JVC SX-DW303 (Matching Subwoofer)

Strengths:
Plenty of settings Good Power 3 Scarts

Weaknesses:
Plenty of settings (can be confusing)

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $339.00 from Crutchfield

Summary:
Purchased this DVD/surround sound system as an entry-level component. The unit had sleek looks, good speaker power, 100W x 5, and a nice remote for the price. I returned the unit w/in the 30 day trial period with Crutchfield do to the weakness described below. If you are looking for a cheap entry to Dolby Digital AND are not using a powered sub-woofer (using the LFE output) then this unit will be acceptable.

Strengths:
Good price for DVD and Surround sound. Remote had good functionality and DVD / CD sound relatively clear. On-screen display helpful

Weaknesses:
1. The LFE output in Pro Logic mode does not turn on a sub-woofer until the volume is above 20 on a 50 scale. Tried this on a separate unit and had the same problem. This is a design issue with the Pro Logic Circuit. Bought a Yamaha receiver and Sub activates correctly in Pro Logic. Definitely a JVC receiver issue. 2. Another weakness is built-in pink noise does not test sub-woofer. 3. FM reception is poor, causing unnecessary distortion

Similar Products Used:
1. Yamaha HT-5550. Sound is much cleaner, Pro Logic signals stronger 2. FM reception is better/stronger. Much better investment for the $$. 3. 75 watt Yamaha receiver as loud and 100 Watt JVC.

Marantz MA-9S2 Power AmplifierThe list above has one tenet that I continue to hold true: high powered amplifiers are necessary to reproduce the full dynamic range of music with most speakers. This became apparent when I changed from the 100 Watt per channel Bella Extreme 100 to the 250 Watt.....

The unit arrived from China well packed and everything seem to be in place. No external abuse by the carriers. The only problem was the power supply it came with. The box came with a cheap step-down converter.
