Review 3 of 71

Price Paid:  $400.00 from Circuit City

Summary:
Another reviewer noted that this receiver can be bright and harsh. They were right to an extent. When listening in stereo, the imaging is good but the tonal balance is quite unpleasant, almost unlistenable. Many stereo recievers sound better that cost less. It may be a matter of associated equipment. I do not recommend listening to anything in stereo if your speakers have high tech titanium tweeters or are already a tad bright. However in dolby digital, DTS, or Logic 7 modes (read 5.1 not stereo), this reciever can sound quite good. Using speaker cables designed with twisted pairs and a fair amount of shielding seemed to help take some edge off also. People who like in your face bass should avoid this product. Other amps were capable of much a much better low octave sound in the same room/setup. The bass was there, but again the balance was unnatural with too much low bass. When listening in surround, the bass was very nice but subdued. This is good if you prefer vocals over booty bass. Altogether, if you prefer listening in stereo, want a very warm sound, or tend to emphasize the bass, then take a second listen. If you don't mind CDs in 5.1 and too much bass distracts, still take a second listen but chances are this will be a good bet for you.

Strengths:
movies sound great clean sound

Weaknesses:
Stereo sound can be bright

Review 4 of 71

Price Paid:  $500.00 from Harman Factory store

Summary:
The HK AVR 310 is technological jungle of fun and great enjoyment, once you figure out the "EZ-set" remote! I use it mainly to drive the surround speakers, and as a preamp for the front speakers.

Strengths:
Versitle Pre-amp arangments, good power, very pleasing to the eye!

Weaknesses:
The only complaint I have, is that the sound is a tad too "digital". I think the sound could be a little more realistic, esp. from a company like Harman. To "warm" up the sound a lil, i use a good old Sansui QRX-3500 to drive the mains :o)

Similar Products Used:
Yamaha, Denon, Sansui

Review 5 of 71

Price Paid:  $1250.00 from general audio

Summary:
I have not had any luck with HK's reliability. I first purchased an AVR310 about a year ago, and after having it set up for about three weeks, the sound decoding chip crashed. I sent the unit away for repair and when i got it back, it quit working that same day again. I finally got a new unit from the factory and it has worked fine for about a year, but now it is giving me problems again. Before I became so frustrated with all the quality concerns, I was very happy with this recievers performance. Movie soundtracks were vibrant and very dynamic, in both DD and DTS. I really liked that the avr 310 has so many digital inputs, and the audio/video inputs on the front panel came in very handy several times as my buddy brings his PS2 over once in a while, though i just wish that there was a cover for these inputs, to clean up the look a little, but that's a small complaint. I'm not bashing on HK, but I can't give this reciever a high rating because of all the problems i had. If you get one that works well, you will be very happy, but I can't say I'm a happy customer.

Strengths:
plenty of power, easy to set up, lots of digital inputs, and i really like the look of it

Weaknesses:
i have lost all confidence in the build quality

Similar Products Used:
am now going to replace this unith with a denon 3802
