Weakness:

Its an all out total disaster.

Problems since day one. Adcom doesnt know the meaning of customer service.Shouldnt market the products if they cant give tech. support. Its a piece of garbage. $2500 down the drain. The design is pathetic. So many component failures one after another. Spent $800 so far. My advice is to stay away from Adcom..its the same company anymore.

Strength:

Digital Signal Processing, Two Channel Sound, Simplicity of design, Price / performance ratio.

Weakness:

Pops when moving from one surround mode to another

I recently received the GTP-750 from Adcom after two GTP-740/DTS units died on me. Adcom "upgraded" my '740 for $100. I really felt like it should be free.

The GTP-750 is a definite upgrade from the 740. The sound is warmer and more neutral. The noise floor appears to be much lower in the 750 than the 740. It also remembers the surround mode correctly whereas the 740 got confused when switching inputs.

I would highly recommend the GTP-750, but by all means, stay away from the GTP-740.

Strength:

Simple to set-up; easy to use; very good sound; built-in demodulator

Weakness:

Limited bass management options (three);limited digital inputs and outputs(three); remote can be somewhat confusing

About one year ago, I decided to enter the home theater age of digital surround sound. I wanted to purchase something in the two thousand dollar or less range. After some research, I narrowed my choices to Rotel, the Acurus Act III, Marantz, and Adcom. I had read the numerous complaints about the Adcom GTP 740 posted on this website and decided on trading my GTP 600 in for the Act III which received more positive reviews. While auditioning the Acurus at Progressive Audio, a local high-end establishment, the salesperson there suggested that I should, also, give the then new GTP 750 a listen. After sharing with him the issues that I had heard concerning the 740, he assured me that the 750 was an improvement over its predecessor and that he even thought that it had a better sound than the Acurus. With some hesitation, I decided to give it a listen and to my surprise, it did sound better than the Act III. I was still somewhat hesitant because other reviewers had complained about the reliability factor. But he assured me that if I was not totally satisfied, I could always bring the unit back and exchange it for the Acurus. I have always considered Progressive Audio to be an excellent business with knowledgeable personnel; therefore, I took the dive. Well, its been almost a year now, and (knock-on-wood)I have not experienced any problems with it nor have I heard the well-documented legendary "hiss". Aside from the fact that it is constantly on or in use by some member of the household, it has been a very fine performer. I am not trying to negate the criticisms of others who have experienced problems with its predecessor nor invalidate the suggestion that to whatever foreign company Adcom is now out-sourcing the assemblage of its processors does not deserve a second look by the company. Maybe, I'm just lucky. Regardless, this is a very good sounding unit and considering the enjoyment that it has brought into our domicile, I am forced to give it an excellent rating.

POOR RELIABILTY! Bad video switching, disgrace to Adcom name

I originally started out with the GTP-740/DTS back when it first came out over 2 years ago. It was filled with all kinds of problems as most of you have read by now. I had to return the 740 twice for audio problems among other things. After the second return ADCOM finally admitted that they had a problem and offered me an upgrade to the 750 for $100. I decided this was my best bet. Once I received the 750 and hooked it up things went VERY smooth! I was extremely impressed at the improvements Adcom made. The audio switching was very good and I didnt have any popping noises. I was able to switch between all modes and never had to cycle power on and off to get things to work. I was convinced that this was going to be the product for me. Well I am here to tell everyone, THE HONEYMOON IS OVER! My 750 has just died. The problem now lies with the video. I have my VCR and my DVD running through the preamp via RCA cables so the video to my TV was also composite. After thorough testing I isolated the problem to the preamp. I swapped cables, took the VCR out of the loop, and directly hooked my DVD to the TV. The video problem I had was like viewing a scrambled cable channel. I thought it was my cable at first, then I noticed the DVD was the same way. I am totally sick of the problems that Adcom has introduced into my home theatre system and I have no intentions on keeping it any longer. Lets just say that Danielle at Adcoms service dept remembered me from the last few times I called over the past 18 months. I have owned Adcom products for about 15 yrs and up to this point they have been flawless! I must say that Adcom better get some new engineers and QA personnel while they still have a chance to salvage their reputation. It is no wonder that no respectable Hi-Fi store will carry their products anymore. In all fairness to Danielle, I appreciate her eagerness to make good on my preamp. Adcom is sending me a NEW unit which should be here tomorrow and I will send them the old one back. I have NO intentions on opening the box and I will sell it to the highest bidder. My plans are to buy a Parasound ??-1800 or something similar. One good thing so far is that the GFA-7400 amp has been very good to me. I will hold off on replacing it until I find a better amp at a good price. I will not buy another ADCOM product until they do some MAJOR restructuring in their company and get back to business as usual. My best advice to anyone who is thinking Adcom... DON'T!

Hey I dealt with Dani too at Adcom... If I owned the company that would be the first upgrade I would do. She was next to useless well OK worse than useless. I dont want to feel like I am being a pain to a company I just purchased a 2000 dollar unit from when it doesn't work. That alone was enough to turn me off Adcom for now, which is a shame because they used to have a good rep. Our local hi end store will be dropping Adcom and going with B&K

Strength:

When it worked the sound was smooth

Weakness:

It came with NO instructions and it will run hot .. Limited controls for bass and treble

I wanted this to work... This unit came defective and the customer support at Adcom was on a scale of 1-10 about a 2.. I was very unhappy with them. The GTP750 made strange noises when it being switched on and it just died after 2 weeks. I will say this... I was surprized at the way Adcom handled this. They have a good rep for a reason but I heard they were just bought out... sigh another one bites the dust I would tell anyone else to wait until the dust clears on the buy-out before getting a GTP 750 When it did work the sound was clear .. no coloring but also the GTP 750 is not made in the USA so I think the QC leaves something to be desired

Strength:

Price/Sound Quality/Deadly Quite

Weakness:

Requires Reading of Owners Manual/ Related to the GTP-740

Just got the 750 this week to replace the 740. All of the problems with the 740 that you can check out in the review section of that unit I also had. Noisy, popping, not enough gain etc.,etc. I have a CD player that I can use it's internal Dac's or the Adcoms Dac's. I even liked the Cd players performance better with the internal dac's than the 740's. Now the 750! The only thing I can see is simsilar is the front panel. The 750's Dac's sound better than the internal one's in my Cd player. I have to put my ear within 6 inches of my Klipsch speakers including a K-7 center channel before I can detect any hiss. Basically no hum. There is no popping when switching between modes. The 750 even has an improved crossover slope's by offering 3 presets for the 5 channel set ups. This unit has only been used about 20 hours but the sound quality is getting better every day. I am feeding this unit to the same amp an Adcom GFA-7500 as I did the 740. I would have to peg the 740's volume control to get good output especially with dolby digital tracks on DVD's. I checked out the Matrix last night and could not go past half way with the 750 as it would shake the walls. For now the best thing I can say is these 2 Pre-amps are totally different animals. Check it out as I think the more costly units by other manufacturers had better worry this time around.
Here's a Plug.
I originally got the GTP-740 from J and S Audio. They allowed me to exchange the 740 for a 750 at little cost difference. You may want to give them a call ask for Jack as he took care of me and my problems which is unusual these days. His number is 304-265-2237.

One last thing I wish people would not post if they don't own the equipment they are trying to review. Think about it? Trying things out for a day or two is very misleading to actual potential owners. You are either talking the talk or walking the walk. Adcom has finally got their revenge this time as they are definitely walking the walk with the GTP-750.

I think I got one of the very first GTP-750s on September 30th. I had orginally looked at a GTP-740 in August becuase I could get a good deal ($1,100 new) but was disappointed by the reviews on this site. So I passed. About a week later my dealer called to tell me that Adcom was replacing the 740 w/ the 750 for 2000. I called Adcom and they confirmed that it had new software and all the bugs in the 740 would be fixed. Yes, the rep admited there were some issues with the 740. I rolled the dice and ordered the GTP-750 in August and waited until it finally came in.
Well...so far it was worth the wait. I have used it for almost daily fo over two months and have not had a problem. It takes a little while to figure out how to set up the unit because the manual stinks but once you have it set up the onscreen displays are very helpful. The only negative is the high pitched hum the unit makes but it is not noticable unless your with a foot ot two. Not really to bad because I have a big room. For the price (I paid $1,400) this a great unit and you will likely be pleased but don't get misled this is not a Lexicon. The 750 has many good features but has a limited number of digital inputs and no component video connections for switching. Overall, great bang for the buck and it performs well with my system which includes an ATI-1505 amp, the GTP-750 and a Sony DVP-S7700 with NHT speakers and Definitive Tech sub.
