I bought my JE510 back in the early winter of 1997. I paid about $550CAN which was quite high, but I never once reget buying it. I've been using MD for about 5 years now and it is still, to this day, hard to believe that MD isn't big as it should be.

I've never had any problems with the JE510. Every function has worked flawlessly. The loading mechanism has never failed me and the sound quality has always continued to put me in awe. MD was and still is a vastly superior medium over CD-Rom. There's newer technology out now, but with MD equipment at an attractive price, you can't go wrong.

I highly recommend anyone out there thinking of getting into MD; to replace your cassette collection and to use as an alternative to CD-R. I love MD because it's so versatile.

If you're short on money, the Sony MZ-R55 portable recorder is the one to buy. Otherwise, get the MDS-JE530 and the super small portable player MZ-E55.

The remote is a bit 'big' (x2 bigger than my tv remote)

I'm using it heavily (like recording a 74 min. MD 4-5 times a week) for more than 2 years without any problems - even a minor one.

Great machine "If you can get disk in and out of deck"

Eject system

I have owned two mini disk of Sony. The mds-je510&320. Both, has gave me serious problems with getting the disk in
and out of these models.
I work for a broadcasting TV&Radio Corp. that owns about
three tv stations and five radio stations and we have not
had any luck with the sony mini disk! GO with any other
mini disk other than sony!!!
They make good video machines. But, stay away from thier
Audio stuff. If you buy any Sony Mini Disk buy the longest
warrenty you can get to go with it. Also, you will be able
to say I Own A Mini Disk you will never be able to show it
to anyone because it will be in the shop!
Thought, Sony was Proffesional but not in MD's...

DO NOT GET THIS UNIT. I have had 2 of them and both had problems in the first 30 days. The first unit developed the power on bug after 2 weeks. The sensor switch that detects a disk being inserted activates power. On these units it geos bad and thinks a disk is being inserted intermittently all the time when there is not one. The second unit after about 3 1/2 weeks jamed a disk durring edject and then would only make grinding noises. It would not take a disk and I had to turn it upside down to get the disk out that was in it. I returned this second unit also. I have herd many other people who have sent the units in to be repaired just to have the problem return after a few months.

I purchased the Sony JE-510 in March of 98. Not incredibly long after that it developed the "auto-on" problem you hear so much about. Then, right after Christmas, it flat out died on me. I was no longer able to put in any discs. The entire unit was fried. I put in the shop at Ultimate Electronics on January 11th. As of this date(April 8, 1999), I still have not gotten it back yet. Constant phone calls and badgering have done nothing to expedite this process. Sony's are great until they break. Sony's service sucks. My younger brother once had a walkman break and waited close to a year for Sony to finally replace the thing. But these desparaging comments to Sony aside. I would still rate the 510 at about a 31/2 - 4. It is my understanding that it is only the batch that came out of Malasia that are the real turds. It is still a dynamite format and I will continue to use and love it.

The Damn Loading-Unloading Mechanism.

I can hardly beleive SONY of all companies would produce such a peice of #$@&. When it did work it recorded excellent and the labeling and editing was great. But that Damn Loading & Unloading Mechanism. I went as far as ordering a Service/Repair Manual for the series. Sony should have a Class Action suit filed against them. And they should fix every damn MDS-JE 500s' & 510s' for free......since there are so many consumers that are having the same problem.

the loading mechanism

I have had problems with the loading mechanism also, but it is really ez to fix. Just take it apart, get the disc out, and unjam it. It's not like the thing was expensive, so give it a try.

Good when it worked

Shoddy engineering of product leads to untimely problems and death. First power problems. Then disc accept/reject problems. Then jamming. Then complete failure.

Don't consider buying a Sony MD. I, like hundreds of other were screwed on this deal. Never again.
