Anyone who has had the opportunity to experienceDTS Digital Surround knows that this is the best
format for discrete digital surround sound. Rotel has
made the RDA-985 an affordable add-on in systems with
a six-channel input provision for an external decoder. By providing both RCA output jacks along with a THX-compatible DB-25 socket (cable included),
this decoder can interface with any brand of receiver
having either type of 6-channel connection. At $500,
this decoder is both inexpensive and good.
Connection to the average system is straightforward. The coaxial digital output from a
laserdisc, DVD, or CD player connects to the input
on the rear panel of the 985. A digital output jack,
located next to the digital input, allows the bitstream to pass through the 985 on the way to an
AC-3 decoder when a DTS-compatible DVD player is used. You merely connect a digital cable from this
output to the AC-3 input on the receiver or preamp.
This connection scheme adds to the versatility of
this unit.
Listening tests confirm that the RDA-985 competes
with DTS processors several times its price, and in

many cases, exceeds them. DTS laserdiscs and DVD's offer a great potential for bringing very dynamic,
solid, and smooth sound into your living room, and
the CD's can put you in the best seat in the house.
Rotel has given the RDA-985 the ability to enhance your home theater experience without breaking the
bank.
