Review 1 of 9

Price Paid:  $175.00 from ebay

Summary:
I only listen to my local Jazz and Classical radio stations and this Proton 300/301 sounds FANTASTIC to my ears (that's coming from someone whose main stereo system consists of a VTL tube amplifier, Kef 104.2 speakers, rega jupiter CD player and other serious cables/interconnects).
The overall tonal balance of the Proton is just superb. The sound is full blown, deep, organic, dynamic (including at low volume) and NEVER fatiguing.
If Classical music sounds unusually good on the Proton, Jazz is so good that it gets addictive quite quickly!

The Proton radio has a tape in on the back so I experimented with an ipod and my Rega CD player. The ipod sounded thin but it could very well be because of my cheap and too long of a cable. The Rega on the other hand sounded VERY GOOD (not as good as within my main system but still, impressive).

When I see Proton sets going for under $100, I can't help thinking this combo is one of the best bargains out there.

Strengths:
Compact with HUGE Organic sound and plenty of power.

Weaknesses:
Due to age, most units will require contact cleaning.

Review 2 of 9

Price Paid:  $250.00 from From Brother

Summary:
I've puchased the 300/301 combo from my brother back in the early eighties and it's been a main source of listning pleasure ever since.
I've always been impressed with the duo and over the years pushed it pretty hard until finally three or four years ago the mid woofer on one of the units gave out.
Not wanting to give up on the unit, I searched for a replacement upgrade for both the mid woofers and the tweeters.
After countless hours of searching I finally found what looked to be the perfect fit from the Dutch company Viffa.
The mids barely fit in with only minor modifications and the tweeters fit right in,.
The results were just amazing!! I was totally blown away, I had no idea this baby could sound this good
I even used the unit for an outdoor dance party last year with a sub woofer and played it with the volume 3/4 ways up for the whole night and it performed amazingly well.
I recommend an upgrade to anybody who owns this radio you won't regret it.

Strengths:
Awsome sound!!

Weaknesses:
None

Review 3 of 9

Price Paid:  $8.00 from Garage sale

Summary:
I've never seen this radio before but was in the market for a table radio for the kitchen. I was considering getting a Tivoli. Saw this radio on the $10(CDN)table at a garage sale and asked to check if it worked. This box sure was heavy. It sounded great...even outside. It pulled in the stations I wanted. So I bought it and hauled it home.

Strengths:
Great sound.

Weaknesses:
Antenna is hardwired to the inside so not easy to substitute.

Review 4 of 9

Price Paid:  $350.00 from eBay

Summary:
This is my 2nd favorite possession... very close behind my dog (a Boxer). I lusted after one of these radios back in the 80's... but like many things in life didn't move quick enough. Well I bit the bullet and bought one off of eBay and cannot possibly share with you how impressed I am with this Proton. Even better than I remembered! I have the radio & the speaker on a bookshelf about 6' apart. Yes, the shelf is "stout"! NOTE*** I'm feeding the two rear RCA imputs on the radio w/a 4' Monster Cable adapter with a 1/8" headphone jack on the other end. The headphone jack in plugged into a new MAC MINI computer! The computer is mounted vertically amid the books between the Proton speakers. I now listen to iTunes & internet radio with the Proton. THERE IS NO BETTER speaker system for a computer... Period! As to AM - FM reception here in NW San Antonio... I get about 32 FM stations and all the damn AM stations from south of the border... nothing new about that. Anyone considering a table radio MUST do themselves justice and "get a Proton 300". It is the BEST $350.00 I've ever spent! Nothing today including the hyper hyped Bose... is anywhere close in design, quality, and performance! This is the definitive Table Radio Standard!

Strengths:
An absolutely "Superb" Tuner... the best I've ever encountered. An overall EXCELLENT design! TOP QUALITY compopnents thruout! At 100 watts each, the radio and the matching 301 speaker are truly mind boggling for a table radio... as they best many high end stereos. This product truly needs it's own catagory!

Weaknesses:
NONE... other than trying to get "truly competent service" on a unit of this vintage and quality (if you ever need it).

Similar Products Used:
NAD, Tivoli, Sangean, & German tube radios.

Price Paid:  $20.00 from Garage Sale

Summary:
Yep, that's right....$20. I paid $20 for this gem at a yard sale here in Plano, TX. I Imagine my surprise when I got it home and plugged it in!! Man !! I was fortunate enough to get both the 300 radio and the 301 extra speaker. I would not sell this for $500 right now. I am so impressed. If you see something like this at a garage sale, make sure it works then pick it up (if your a weight lifter) and take it home. You will not be disapointed.

Strengths:
Small size Big BIG sound (rated @ 100W per channel)

Weaknesses:
Ummmmm.....hmmmmmm...none.

Marantz MA-9S2 Power AmplifierThe list above has one tenet that I continue to hold true: high powered amplifiers are necessary to reproduce the full dynamic range of music with most speakers. This became apparent when I changed from the 100 Watt per channel Bella Extreme 100 to the 250 Watt.....
