Strength:

Great Sound, Clean performance, durability over time.

Weakness:

Large and complex remote and with todays electronics, no decoding ability

I purchased this receiver three years ago. I can honestly say that the sound is suprising on low end speakers. The wattage seems much more that 80 watts front L,C,R and 40 watts surround sound.

This is a great system for a great price for someone that has a DVD player with a decoder or for someone with a more music oriented goal.

This is an excellent piece of equipment. It can play very loud and precise and you can feel the bass in your stomach. The 5.1 input and the s-video at the back are good to have also. If you can do without DD or have a DVD player with built in DD-decoder, this is a very good HT-beginner-receiver. Taking the price in consideration, I'll give it four stars for its all-around performance

Strength:

Power, Styling, Ease of use, Upgradability

Weakness:

Weak spring loaded speaker terminals for surround channels, Thin metal casing, Pressed heatsink not cast. Limited S-video inputs.

THis receiver performs pretty well, except for some of the shortcomings in the build quality (thin outer case and surround speaker connections) it is otherwise built pretty well, hi-mass feet, large transformer (Unit weighs 27.5 Lbs).

The sound quality is quite nice, low end leaves something to desire but otherwise it is defined and open, the surround is pretty good except for a little hiss in the rear channels only, the cinema dsp helped the soundstage in movies a lot, in 70mm mode really is impressive for a pro-logic receiver, it is a 5 channel amp, so it is upgradable to 5.1 via a external decoder, also the subwoofer out crossover is set at 200hz instead of the standard 80hz which is nice. i wish it had more then 2 s-video inputs (1 in the back and 1 in the front and 2 s-video outs on the back)and 5 composit inputs and 1 output as well as a phono input which some manufactures seem the think no-one listens to records anymore (to bad nothing has beaten a record fidelity wise). in home theater it performed quite well with plenty of power and definition the rear channels performed very well with lots of dynamic range considering they are only rated at 40wpc, you also have a 8/4 ohm switch on the back so you do not overdrive the amp when using low impediance speakers (all relay controlled surround modes and dsp modes), channel separation is good with little bleeding. in 2 channel mode is provides some extra punch in the low end and more dynamic power that is noticable. also it stays pretty cool tempuyrature wise unless you start pumping it, then it will start to heat up fast. the remote is pretty good but very difficult to program, to many different modes nowhere near as easy to program as the Integra's remote. i found that i permanently had the tone bypass and the bass extension activated. the tuner is pretty solid not like a seprate but it is better then the integra in that aspect, the video switching is also quite nice, adds a little brightness to the picture but definately keeps it clean.

overall if you can find one of these used it is a great start into the world of home theater, probably for the price one of the best starter unit's you can find. for the $225.00 i paid (in new condition with original remote) it was a steal considering it retailed for $750.00.

I got this receiver from an online auction (eBay) for $275.00 with shipping.I bought this unit for my HT,(Panasonic A310-DVD, HK 710-CD, NAK CR2A-tape, speakers - mix Klipsch and Energy) and I'm very pleased with the sound quality.
Pro Logic performance and processing, Yamaha's Digital Sound Field Processing, and Cinema DSP is very good.
Remote control unit - too big and complex.

Strength:

Wonderful sound-stage imaging and clear processing.

Weakness:

Bulky remote and weak display on receiver.

I found this unit as a "used" item at a local high-fidelity store in town. I was amazed at the price of $250 for this unit, since it retailed for $700. Either way, it has certainly proven to be a great purchase.

This unit has really got it all. Great sound processing, superb imaging for movies, and discrete channel input for DVD's!! It really is an experience to hear this kind of processing, and this unit really shines in that regard.

Although this unit does not have a lot of output wattage, it really does well for a medium sized room with the right equipment. The hook-ups in the back are pretty plain and simple, and there is even a video/s-video jack located in the front of the unit for dubbing.

I give this unit 5 stars because of the overall value for which I purchased it for, and the quality of sound. If you have the opportunity to purchase this unit for your home, you will certainly be in heaven!!
