Strength:

It's still operating after all these years, but it needs a cooler since when you run 7.1 channels loud, it shuts down due to overheating. I want to sell it and upgrade to the latest Yamaha. | Amarillo Drywall Contractors

Strength:

Incredible reliability. I play this unit at almost full volume most of the time and have been doing so for many years. it's crystal clear even above 0db on the volume control. I do run 2 12 inch klipsch powered subs along with it. I also have 9 speakers hooked up to it and run all of them flawlessly. I can't say enough about this receiver. If you run across one, buy it. You will not be disappointed.

Weakness:

Only 1 subwoofer out. I use a Y connector.

This receiver is absolutely a best buy. It offers an array of features that you won't find for a triple of the price. Sound and video quality are outstanding, easily compared to units a lot more expensive. You can compare to separates easily, and it is unbeatable with a much lower price tag. It is very powerful and will drive any efficient speakers at easy. I should say it will drive any set of speakers, although, it gets hot at high volume. I will strongly suggest you to get an audio cooling fan to make sure it will work efficiently and last a long time (it does have an internal cooling fan that will go on and off as needed but i use a cooling fan anyway). I got mine in 2006 and as of today still running perfectly with no problems, Dec, 2012 as of today. Note, it runs everyday no mercy!!
You will need to get acquainted with the remote and set up functions due to so many features, so READ THE MANUAL!!! I have compared this receiver to many others and also to separates three times the price, and trust me, no much difference in sound and video quality. When talking to separates, i would say that sound will get better but you will have to pay easily three times the price tag and have room for bulky and heavy equipment. I totally recommend this excellent receiver and my kudos to Yamaha.

Strength:

YPAO setup out of the box is very nice and gets you going right away.
HDMI Pass-through.
Clear Display.
Functional remote though not lighted.
Array of connections.
Great Price for such an excellent component.
Etc.....

Weakness:

Buttons on remote are not lit.
Can get hot if not well-vented.
Adjustments outside of YPAO setup can be complicated.

Incredible sound qaulity and ease of setup using the YPAO. Clear - Crisp sound that is head and shoulders above others that I have tested or listened to. I got a great deal on it and pulled the trigger after researching several models. The HDMI connections are a huge plus because of the single cable connection for both sound and video which eliminates some of the wiring messes you can get with various input options.

Strength:

HDMI switching
OUTSTANDING DSP!
Auto configuration (YPAO)
numerious Input and outputs

The first thing that truly impressed me by this receiver was when my wife asked me if I had purchased new speakers. She never notices that kind of stuff. The YPAO auto-config is especially nice, and I found it to need very little tweaking, it will even tell you if the wires are backwards/out of phase on each speaker. I have this set up with 7.1 and it is absolutely remarkable. The DSP selections are a little confusing at first, but quickly become 2nd nature, and listening to CDs has never been more fufilling than with the 7 channel stereo option. Pink Floyd's "Time" absolutely blows everyone away who listens to it (and I make everyone listen to it). I confess to not buying this at all for the music listening features, but its outstanding performance has renewed my interest in listening to CD material. I have not found the "pure direct" mode to be beneficial because the DSP enriches CD material to such a degree as to render the original 2 channel mix boring and flat.

The unit operates at a fairly high temperature, requiring adequate ventilation. Setup could not be easier, but there are so many manual options that if done manually vs. the microphone YPAO routine, a new owner may get frustrated. I suggest letting the YPAO do its thing and then tweaking after you understand the manual better.

One of the primary reasons I bought this was for HDMI switching - not upconverting. At first I was displeased with the picture, but then read the manual where I learned that upconversion should be turned off if your sources are already 720p or 1080i - this would result in picture degradation. Sure enough, I turned it off and everything is crystal clear.

My Harmony remote controls this unit flawlessly as well.

I am very happy with this purchase.

Strength:

The thing about this reciever is that it upscales existing DVD's to psuedo Hi Def. I wasn't sure what this would mean in the big scheme of things but seeing is believing.

The picuture was impressive and noticible over HDMI connections. There is a slight pause when going to menus on DVD's because the signal coming out of the DVD has to be upconverted before it can be displayed. This is a minor issue and well worth the wait.

I can't wait for my HD DVD player to see how well they merge. I'm going to pick up my HDMI cable box now.

Weakness:

Heavy and runs hot. I didn't notice the temp until I touched the glass about the reciever and it felt warm to the touch. Aside from that, no issues to report.

I bought this reciver for one reason....HDMI.

This is sort of a lie because I had a previous Yamaha reciever that I loved and wanted to stay in the same family. I was thinking of getting the new reciver because of HD DVD's that are coming out and my television has a HDMI port but the current Yamaha reciver didn't.

So I bought the new 5990 and let me say...WOW!

Absolutely beautiful. Very easy to set up especially if you own HDMI components. It was almost too simple. I set the Hi Def Television to the HDMI channel and the reciever did the rest.
