Strength:

Sound quality, power, well built

Weakness:

Lack of features, cheapo remote, gets hot, died on me, ugly.

This was my first surround sound reciever amd I am very happy the results. This unit to me seems to be of higher quality than others in the price range. It seemed to focus more on quality and sound then it does on looks. On the inside it has a big fat transformer and a couple huge transistors connceted to a big heat sink and fan. The sound itself on the unit was clear, neutral, and undistorted even at high volumes. With the six channel inputs the sound was even better especially with DVD Audio. What I did not like was the lack of features. I ran out of S video ports and had to buy one of those stupid switches. The remote albiet cute, was cheap and looked like it belonged with a 10 year old vcr, not a receiver of this caliber. Another thing that was not good was the look of it. It cannot ever be considered graceful of elegant. It just looks like a big brownish box. This reciver is a great performer in the audio department, but its features, remote and aestetics are lacking. Unfourtunatly my beloved Technics died about three years after it was purchased making me have to buy another less capable AV receiver.

Strength:

Fine volume control. Good AM tuner. Sound selections to fit the audio genre.

Weakness:

Not intuitive to turn on and off (tricky). MOSFET failure in first year. Got hot. Low humming noise over the audio. Poor center channel performance. Difficult to find local authorized repair center.

When we first set it up we were very pleased with it. We liked being able to adjust the sound type (Live, Theater, Sim-Surround, etc.) The fine volume control was nice. With less than a year of operation the receiver sound started to cut out intermittently. After the receiver has been on for a while the sound cuts out every 5 seconds or so. The blue MOSFET light has also illuminated and will not go off. We haven't been able to use it for months now. We moved shortly before the failure and were not able to locate our paperwork to make a warranty claim within the one-year period. We are very unhappy with the unit - obviously. Repairman estimates $200+ to repair.

Strength:

Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, 5 x 100 W, great sound, DSP modes, enough inputs, outputs

Weakness:

Receiver is making hot in short time, fan works only on large power, can't record from front VCR2 to VCR1, volume handwheel shold be I think powered by engine.

Sorry, for my English, I'm from Poland :)This receiver makes great sound, have enough power, and enough audio and video inputs, also digital (coax and 2 optical), has SVideo inputs/output, but signal from SVideo can't be lead out by Video Output and "viceversa". Also supports RDS system, blue "MOS-FET" light is great :),

Strength:

20Hz-20Khz, DTS, Banana plugs for the A channels + B channel for stereo, MOSFET amp design, TA-KE capacitors, tight bass response and 5.1 channel inputs

Weakness:

For best sound needs equalizer........... Pretty blue light lights up room (can be turned off)

This receiver is undoubtedly the best receiver for under 750. It does 20Hz-20Khz and has superb clarity that will blow your mind away. One test* proved that it could put out 120watts RMS at 8 ohms and 130 RMS at 6 ohms. (*consumer report, they actually use wattage meters, not their ears)also can do 4 ohm stable (you may only use A or B but not both at 4 ohms). Does not run hot! It runs at a decent temperature for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFET). This receiver also hosts Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic for surround modes and 5 multi-speaker soundfields (Hall, Club, Live, Theater and simulated surround).

Strength:

Natural, clear sound, great bass. Works great with a satellite/sub setup. Is better than any reciever you''ll get in a home theater-in-a-box.

Weakness:

Causes people to drool on it, not waterproof.

This is my first reciever for home audio, I have a decent one in my car. My first impression was clarity and great bass. I do have a Rockford Audionics 12" Subwoofer, which I highly recommend and probably adds to the experience. This system works very well with a satellite/sub system. Even though the amp isn''t very powerful for large speakers, satellites sing with this reciever. I am overpowering my satellites by a few watts, which I talked to a certified audio expert about. He said I will actually get better sound quality this way, but the speakers won''t last as long. It''s a sacrifice I''m willing to make. What makes the reciever sound quality so great is the MOS-FET and the TA-KE capacitors (actually made out of bamboo). What you get in return is natural sounding, powerful sound. I love it, and I think that I got exactly what I need to listen to music, watch DVD''s, and hook up to an XBOX whish has in-game 5.1 surround sound.

Strength:

Good Price Decent features

Weakness:

Runs too hot Remote isnt so great Hard to set up

My family has had this reciever for about a year now. For the most part, it is an excellent reciever. It has some downsides to it though. First is the setup. To change the input on the DVD from optical to coaxial took me 30 minutes! The setup is too confusing, and should have a seperate button instead of having to press the A + B speaker selectors at the same time. Also, the thing gets way too hot. The fan has never came on as far as I know. I emailed the tech support and they said it only comes on for a brief peaks. I also dislike how changing the volume via remote is rather slow. The ability to attenuate it by 1dB steps is nice though. I like how the subwoofer level is adjustable for a 20dB range. All in all, its a nice reciever. Worth the price I paid.

Strength:

- Digital inputs can be reassigned despite what you read elsewhere. The default for TV is opt1 which I changed to COAX since my cable box has COAX digital audio out. -From the remote you can adjust all 5.1 channel levels independently, switch through different DSP sounds modes, has A+B speaker selection and other neat things.

Weakness:

- When using digital audio sources bass/treble can not be adjusted - SFC modes do not work on digital audio, only analog - The manual as usual is poorly written with not enough example setups ie. if you have a digital cable box with DVD & VCR, etc..

Comparing features, specs & cost to other receivers, this receiver by Techincs has to be the best value deal out there. Here''s why: For its price you''re getting a high current amp, high signal to noise ratio (better than even some high end Harmon Kardon receivers), video switching including S-Video and composite video jacks, 3 re-assignable digital audio input jacks (2 opt, 1 coax) and that cool looking blue MOSFET light! The end result is a VERY clean sound with minimal noise and overall practical functionality. If you''re considering the SA-DX950, don''t. For the difference in cost the SA-DX1050 offers more in terms of functions and some quality specs too. Example: the DX1050 amplifies 20-20kHz, the DX950 40-20kHz. Other receivers in this price range to not come close to this one. I originally did buy the DX950, but returned it the next day for the DX1050!

Strength:

DTS, Dolby, A&B speakers, clean sound- no hiss, s-video, 2 optical, 1 coaxial, "A" speaker inputs accept banana clips, cooling fan

Weakness:

No "A"- "B" speaker switching or digital input selection from remote

This receiver is a great bargain but is hard to find because of a great Consumer Reports rating. I got mine as a close-out at BestBuy for $199. You can find it on the web for $249 but they are selling off fast. You get Dolby Digital, DTS, 2 S-video, 1 digital co-axial, 2 optical, 100 watts a channel (that''s at 6 ohms, so it''s more like 75 watts per channel w/ 8 ohm speakers) of pretty clean power, A & B speaker option, subwoofer out, treble, bass and subwoofer levels, easy to set up (if you have the manual) and no hiss in surround mode. The sound for traditional audio playback is neutral and un-colored. In fact, I replaced my Onkyo with this to avoid dealing with 2 receivers- 1 for audio, 1 for home theater. This unit can handle low impedance speakers (there''s a setting), has a "small" or "large" speaker size setting or bass level management, and remote control speaker levels to customize the surround sound. While I''m sure the higher-end receivers offer better audio quality for super-critical listening, this unit has features that $800 receivers don''t have and it sounds great. Compared to the junk that Kenwood, JVC, Sony, Aiwa and others make in this price range, it is a hard to beat product.
