high output power, easy to use, very clear sound quality, stays cool, loads of inputs, looks good, very low distortion at high volumes.

some buttons are a little tricky to figure out.

this reciever rocks! of course im no top of the line user, but for my first reciever this one satisfies my needs for now. I've had some other surround recievers, like a 400W panasonic reciever w/dolby digital 5.1. And i thought it was great, but this reciever has a load of power for all speakers, especially the front and main stereo speakers.

Really a great Receiver! But now I am goning to change it for the ONKYO TX-DS777. Because I want DTS and THX. And that is the best receiver at this price in The Netherlands.

Good quality sound at a reasonable price, reasonable features

Purchased this receiver back in early 1995 primarily for music then for AV. A very good value for money receiver with ample power and features. I have since replaced it with a Yamaha RX-V3000 for DD5.1 & DTS using DVD and digital TV, mini disc input etc. For good old prologic or stereo it is hard to beat (except for the Onkyo 717). I used B&W 4 ohm speakers with it and the receiver showed no sign of overheating. This receiver is now used in another room as part of a music only system for listening to background music etc etc.

I decided to go with the Yamaha the second time round due to fally build and sound quality of current Onkyo products. There AV receivers where second to non up and including the 535 series.

I've had it for about 4-1/2 years. I bought it originally because it sounded better than the comparable Sony and Denon units. The only problems I have encountered is the front panel fuse going out ($80 to fix) and the power knob is rather "sticky". Other than that, it has been a die hard workhorse and sounds superb. I would reccomend the unit if you're looking for a quality Pro Logic Receiver at a good price. The unit lacks a sub-out connection which is rather disheartening if you want to add a powered subwoofer to the system. Power to the rear surround speakers is rather low, but at the time of purchase was better than most. Wanting a Dolby Digital (AC-3) unit, I have recently purchase a Harman/Kardon AVR-75 at an unbeatable price and am anxiously awaiting delivery. Once I set it up I will put in a review for it.

Solid bottom end in stereo mode. Ability to multi-source, multi-room. Remembers settings for each input.

AM reception. Surround channels have low power. Not AC-3 capable. Video switching adds noise.

This was my second Onkyo purchase. (Bought separates in late 70's and they still crank!) I still use the 515 as centerpiece of my main system. Looking hard at a Dolby Digital receiver ie., Onkyo TS-676, Integra DTR-6 or Marantz SR-7000 depending on who's got a good deal. In the meantime, the old Onkyo is very quiet, a little warm with my Paradigm Titans and Atoms, Velodyne sub. This unit is much more solid sounding than the Sony STR-D911 I picked off E-bay. FM reception quite good from my dedicated attic antenna. AM reception quite disappointing. Multi-room/multi-source feature is nice but activating that feature defeats surround channels. Overall a fine starter receiver or great for a den.
