Clean and rich sound for 85 watts of power

none considering a four year old unit. Time to upgrade to the newer models.

I purchased this unit over 4 years ago. It was a replacement for the Onkyo TX525 that was fried by a lightning storm. This unit had the buzzing problem that so many other reviewers had mentioned below. I contacted the Onkyo customer service dept. and they knew about the problem. I sent it in and they fixed the problem. 4 years later, the unit is still going strong with no buzzing problem. Full and rich sound

No THX , No DTS ES ,No DTS 24/96

I have been using the Onkyo TX-DS696 for nearly 2 years and am very satisfied with its performance . It is a great receiver .Surround sound is good and stero is rich and warm . But I am thinking of changing to Onkyo TX-SX 701 which has more surround modes like THX-select , DTS ES and DTS 24/96 . Can anyone give me some advices ? Thanks

clean sound with great vocals and power.adjustments to suit room and listener. remote is nice and easy to use especially the back light function.

instruction book needs improvement..and no diagram of theback of the unit.its shown piece meal for each function.

i upgraded from a harmon kardon avr 25 mk2 to the onkyo DS676 only a couple of days ago. the difference is startlingy different. both are high current amps but the onkyo seems to be cleaner and has many more user adjustments as well as dolby digital. the sound is clean and no hiss(atleast so far)the vocals smooth and bass tight. the amp seemed to have a lot of power on the spec sheet and the reviews. the strange thing is the innitially sounded ok but not great as claimed.much fiddling with the various setings improved the sound but i was not really impressed. the immense power was just not there. looking through this website is saw a review where it mentioned that another user also had a similar problem and fixed it by turning up the speaker level 10 db. i did this and also turned up the dvd input level 09-10db on the intellisync the difference was amazing. the amp just opened up and the famous onkyo sound came through.the power was all there as claimed and infact more than i can handle. at the ref level its simply far too loud. the instruction book explains how to set the amp up but does not explain what each function does..something lacking here.i am not sure if its ok to turn both the speaker level and the inout level up 10 db each.. will this overload? anyone with advcie please email me. i am still tweaking the amp for the best sound. the picture quality and speach from the centre is super and very clear.. i listen to jazz, country, instrumental and some light rock..with all kinds of music the amp performed well.i innitialy planned to add a 5 channel power amp but with the onkyo i dont see the need. its a great mid level reciever and recomment any one looking for similar products to audition it.

Would someone who owns the Onkyo TX-DS676 receiver and is not having any problems with it please email me and help me out with a question. I was wondering if you can tell me if you hear ANY hiss at all from the center channel speaker (you should), like if you put your ear up to it. If so, how far away can you get and still hear it. I would really appreciate any response. Thanks. The email system here on this site isn't working correctly.

Great Sound, Great Price

I bought the Integra DTR-6 (supposedly same as 676 but with better components). Manual was good. Tons of connections. Sounds awesome (both music and DVD). Blade and Matrix both kick ass. If you stick your ear really close to the center speaker you can hear a slight hiss if the volume is turned up with no sound or music coming through. Never would have noticed it if not for all the bad reviews (probably Denon owners mad that they overpaid). Had a Pro-Logic Denon previously and was actually looking to buy another initially but the ONKYO was a better value. Highly recommended.

I had a hiss, but it was with a Kenwood amp. The hiss was from my old tv, the Onkyo picked up the hf thew tv puts out through the speaker cables and hissed in the middle. I had a 10 year old Mitsubishi and repalced it with a new 32" JVC. No humm or hiss on the Kenwood, as for the Onyo, sounds great, never hissed. By the way, .39c a foot 14g lamp cord works just as well as $3.39c a foot 14g monster cable, just a thought.

For the DTR-6: I upgraded to the DTR-6 after purchasing a DTR-5 several months ago. What a difference! Forget about the hissing or humming problems mentioned in some of the reviews, you can't base an entire product line on a couple of people who got a bad receiver. This product produces very clean and clear music and movies. I'm running Paradigm Monitor 7s, CC350 center, Mini Monitor surrounds and an M&K sub and the Integra DTR-6 makes 'em sing loud and beautiful!

The onscreen menu is a great feature and easy to use, the 5 channel stereo is great. The drawback is the remote which has backlighting and a nice layout but no preprogrammed remote codes.

Bottom line - this is an awesome receiver and I would highly recommend it for the under $1000 buyer.

I was looking for the best reciever to my ears. I listened to the Sony STR-DE925 and the Marantz SR7000. But I liked the Onkyo TX-DS676 the most. The sound is sharper and very clear. And for stereo audio it is very good.
I'm in love with this A/V Reciever. It is very powerful and has a deep bass. When I was watching some anime DVD movies I could hear everything very clear and and tremendous bass without subwoofer.
It is easy to use and the user manual is very good and easy to understand. I installed my Onkyo TX-DS676 in one day. And the setup is very easy. And the selflearning remote is very easy to use. In about 20 minutes the remote learned my TV remote and my Sony CD Player remote.
And it has four digital inputs and a lot of inputs and outputs.

I have more to tell about it, but I'll leave it here.

Earlier this year I began shopping for a 5.1 channel receiver to replace my stereo-only Carver pre-amp. I seetled on the HK AVR500 based on good past experiences with the brand. Unfortunately, that product failed to measure up in several categories--it pruduced an audible hum through the center channel, regardless of program material, produced an annoying 'click' through each speaker for each db the volume was adjusted, and had a very bad remote and OSD.

Enter the Onkyo TX-DS676, with which I replaced the AVR500. The 676 offers plenty of A/V inputs, S-Video switching, and 4 assignable digital inputs (2 coax, 2 optical). It has plenty of clean power, and is very dynamic in both Dolby Digital and DTS modes. Another plus is pre-outs for all channels. The on-screen display is good, and I like the remote which I find easy to program and easy to use. The 676 has many other features which I havn't mentioned, including several DSP modes, 5 channel stereo, etc. I heartily recommend considering it if you are shopping in this price range.

This is directed to "Bill McGowen, Audio Enthusiast from El Paso" and anyone else in denial about the center channel hum/hiss. It absolutely is a defect in the unit. How do I know? Because my first one suffered from it. I called Onkyo and they sent me a new one. The new one has no center channel hum or hiss. It is perfectly quite down to the lowest volume level. The new unit is in the same location, connected to the same speakers using the same wires with the same DVD player attached to it. Even Onkyo admits the problem and says it is a 10 minute fix that can be done at your local repair shop (I couldn't get one that wasn't booked, so Onkyo set me a new unit). One Onkyo technicial told me that it was NOT caused by anything in my house. It is caused by it's own Wide Range Amplifier Technology not being grounded properly in the unit. I give the new unit awesome ratings. I am still disappointed that Onkyo would not recall all of the defective units when they discovered the problem - maybe it was a bad solder job in some of the units.
