Not sure of the model year.
This receiver is my first integra. I have two onkyos. TX-ds797 and a tx-sr502. Both great machines. The 797 is one heavy bit.. the integra seems to be outclassing both of them which has been seconded by a few others that the integra line is a step up. As I peek into the top cover I see some pretty shiny black substantial caps with a gold stripe down the side and am instantly curious. But one listen with a creek cd43 and some klipsch fortes and I know right away. The bass has some weight and the treble is pleasing. It is a pretty sharp looking unit with a clean dynamic sound with a good amount of air helping the fortes image better. I'm impressed. Power supply, tighter tolerances, whatever the reason it just sounds great to me.
I don't even have the remote, and have not tried it yet with movies but for music I think it is a cut above and mates well with good equipment. I even like the silver contrast volume knob. Ten+ years old it still sounds clean, punchy and quite refined. Kudos onkyo integrans. 2up.

Strength:

70 watts of pure, continuous, power DTS,WRATT,Multizone Smart backlit, remote All for $500

Weakness:

NONE

I purchased the Integra 5.1 at the end of the summer of 2000. I was replacing my Sony 100 watt per channel, pro-logic receiver. I was always a Sony man until I listened to the Integra SMOKE -(@70 watts per) the Sony in a duel at the Soundwaves. The Integra was so crisp and clear, that the music I'd been listening to all of these years must have been choked off from reality by the Sony. I was so impressed by my new Integra that I called the manager @ the SoundWaves and thanked him for showing me this new receiver. The ease of use with the DTS, RS 232, Svideo, etc...etc.. featuresn has conviced me that Onkyo/Integra will be my choice in audio from now on. Be sure your connections are made with solid cables, Acoustic Research has some excellent cables and great prices -(No need to spend $1000.00 on monster, over priced, cables)

Strength:

Great power, despite only being rated for 70WX5. Very high quality construction. Very natural sound from digital sources. Terrific value for the money.

Weakness:

Remote programming is a little challenging, though very flexible. DTS mode does work with Cinema Re-EQ function. No component video inputs/outputs.

The DTR 5.1 is a great receiver for the money. When I purchased the unit in January 2001, I believed it to be one of the best values in DTS receivers at that time. I have been using it since then and I have been very satisfied with how it sounds and functions. The power out of each of the five channels is more than adequate for my speakers (Energy Take 5's) mainly due to the high quality construction of the amplifier within the unit. With regards to sound quality, I have experienced what could be described as very natural sound, not colored by too much or too little midrange or high frequencies. I am not sure about low frequency reproduction with full range speakers, since I use a sub. However, my sub (an 8” Energy e:xl-S8) also sounds great, which I am sure has as much to do with the sub as it does with the quality of the output signal. When considering this review please also keep in mind that I am using digital inputs for both the CD player and the DVD player (a Harmon-Kardon FL8350 and Onkyo Integra DPS-5 respectively). Since I rarely play a non-Digital source through this receiver, I really am not in a position to comment on how well it reproduces analog signals. The only problem that I have with the receiver is that the sound cuts out in DTS mode when the Cinema Re-Equalization function is turned on. When I took the unit to an Onkyo service center for repair, I was told that Cinema Re-EQ is not supposed to be used with DTS and that the only problem was a printing error in the owner’s manual. Regardless, anyone who owns this unit should not use the Cinema Re-EQ function with DTS mode. When the Re-EQ function was turned off, the sound no longer cut out in DTS mode. Finally, I think this is great receiver and I would recommend it or one of the newer Integra models to others.

Strength:

Sound Quality, power, remote.

Weakness:

Bass tone control, no pre outs.

Bought a demo. I listened around before i bought this piece, and the sound was heads above any of the other recievers i heard. Good features, but some features i'd like to see carried over from the onkyo line are the variable crossover and the bass tone control at 50hz instead of 100hz. Overall great piece and a great buy.

Strength:

* Best remote in class, FULLY backlit * 6.1 dts-es --- 80 wattsx6 * Nice dsp modes, great 5 channel stereo * All connections GOLD plated * Better capacitors, power supply..(over Onkyo) * Automatically senses what mode to decode(Dolby digital, dts...hell, this thing thinks for you!) * Nice easy set-up, no on screen needed for speaker distance, large/small ect... * Looks classy

Weakness:

No pre-outs for external amp(If you want to blow your house down, I guess)

This is a review for the Integra 5.3 : Well after much comparing and research I have wound up with this new Integra. First, I started by comparing in person, Onkyo, Denon and Harmon. Though the differences are minor, the Onkyo 600 had a better, clearer treble then the other two, so I bought it. Things were going good with the Onkyo when about a week later I got a call from Pecar Electronics that the new Integras were in (I told them to put me on the list a month or two ago). Started researching the Integras again, and I couldnt help it but to take the Onkyo back, and get this Integra for only 40.00 more. Well heres the deal: Im using Energy Take 5.2s w/ 8.2 sub and the sound is definitely smoother and more detailed with the Integra. In one word, SWEET. Ive found that not only is the sound a little more detailed, but that the channel separation is better too. Movies are awesome on this, but music is just great. Now, the Energys are not going to blow you away with db levels, but the Integra makes their little aluminum domes just sing and its a beautiful thing. Ive since becaome a big jazz fan just because of this set up. Snare drums, high hats, sax, guitar..ect.. are so detailed! In two channel mode, it totally sounds like the center channel is on, amazing. In 5 channel it actually gets louder, so you know this baby have real watts...Needless to say Im very happy!! Did I mention it looks kick ass too??

Strength:

Quality,Warranty,DTS,Surrond Stereo,power rating,GREAT SOUND!

Weakness:

Runs a little hot.

I have looked high and low to find a great receiver for the last few months. I have shopped non-stop in local audio stores, chain stores and internet stores to find a truly great all-around receiver. It need to have DTS capability, at least 70 watts per channel, numerous connections, and a good brand name. Since I have used Denon in the past I looked at the 2800/2801 models. No doubt about it, they are great products. Have everything you are looking for in a surround receiver. Quality is great on that product plus you can purchase at a great discount on the net.
I also looked at the Outlaw Receiver. I never seen one, just seemed like a good product. And by the testimonials on this service, everyone raves about it. Especially their matrixed 6 channel surround. This really interested me.
Until one day I looked at the Integra line of products. I have seen their ads in magazines, I don't know anyone who has one. I always thought they were an Onkyo with a higher price. I was wrong!!! This has as much in common with an Onkyo as Toyota has with a Lexus..Get the point?? The product is simply great. PERIOD. WHY??
1. The quality is as good or better than Denon. It's that good. It is a tank.
2. It has a 3 year warranty, gee the manufacture beleives in the product why shouldn't I????
3. It has Dolby Digital, DTS and surround stereo. If you don't get DTS on a receiver you don't know what you are missing for movies.. Surround Stereo is the best.Denon has it, Outlaw doesn't.
4. The power is only 70 watts, 90 at 6 ohms.. Trust me, it is plenty of power unless you have a mansion. But, these are REAL 70 watts at a low distortion, unlike the mass produced products that have elevated ratings.. If you have efficient speakers, this baby rocks!!!
5. Lastly is price. The retail is $600.00. This is in line with the Outlaw and a little more than the 2801. I got mine for much less, as it was a floor model. It is a Great Bargain at my price. Since it is now a discontinued product, you should be able to buy at a discount. If you can get this product for around $500 or so it a steal. Even closer to list, I think it is the BEST receiver in the $500 to $600 range. Trust me, I have done a lot of research! Remember, that you get what you pay for. Don't look for a cheap receiver; get a receiver that will look good, and perform well for years to come... This product will surprise you just how good it is. Especially the Dolby/DTS surround sound, it performs great!

Strength:

Build and Warranty, Sound

Weakness:

Price a little high

Great sound with music in stereo I do not care for eq on any reciver. Great sound with movies in all modes DTS is just unreal. Use with Paradigm Atoms, CC70 center, ADP70 surrounds. When set in auto the reciver will set it self to the best sounding processing but I still have to set it on My Torshiba DVD first. I find the remote to be good for working the reciver. But not so good as a universal. All gold contacts nice plus.

Strength:

Incredible home theatre sound, good audio music sound.

Weakness:

Wish audio music sound (CDs) was a little better. But I guess I'll have to rob a few banks before I can start buying seperates.

After auditioning many Dolby Digital/DTS receivers in the 500 - 1000 range, this receiver beats all the rest in performance, quality, and value. Just listening and watching movies for several months on a low end Toshiba DVD1500 and no subwoofer the sound was still very revealing and astonishing. I have never heard a reciever in this price range that has such clean, detailed, and natural sound. Intermediate - Average Home Theater Enthusiasts will love this machine. If you're an avid audio enthusiast, or even just a average listener, looking for a great reciever at budget cost, the Onkyo Integre DTR 5.1 is second to none a killer machine.

Strength:

Sound quality, ease of use.

Weakness:

some features only accessible from the front panel

I have used this receiver for only 1 month and I can't even begin to describe how much I like. It is my first surround piece. I purchased an Onkyo CD player in '89 and it still sounds great.

I did a lot of shopping around and listened to many different pieces (sony, denon, NAD, technics, Nakamichi) and was sold immediately upon hearing the Onkyo.
5 ch. stereo really fills a room, and the DTS and Dolby Digital modes are amazing.

For speakers I have
Front - PSB 40MKII (soon to be PSB Image 4T)
Centre - PSB Image 8C
Surround - PSB Image 1b
Sub- PSB Alpha subsonic 5

Strength:

WOW! In this price range, nothing can match it. Warm Sound, Plenty of Power, Good Variety of Digital Imputs.

Weakness:

Lacks Component Video (have to go up a few steps for it), Remote is a bit bulky.

When I picked up this receiver a year ago, it was after about 6 months of research and auditioning as well as picking up a second job in order to pay for my theater :). It was cutting edge then and still blows away the competition now. Really had wanted to go Denon, but as Integra adds some more levels to the Denon-quality (if not better) ladder, it was my choice and I have never looked back.

The DTS and Dolby Digital are excellent for the range and the quality of workmanship that went into the power supplies as well as the connections on the back is amazing. I just added the matching DVD changer and got goosebumps AGAIN (as I did the first time I heard it).

Running with:
NHT 2.5i (mains)
NHT AudioCenter One
NHT 1.5 (rears)
