Strength:

great performer! Really nice stereo only mode and does a terrific job with 5.1 DVD movies.

Weakness:

Not a "powerhouse" but very able. Don't use this in a large room. Get a bigger HK with more power.

Nice clean sound whether it's stereo only or 5.1 surround the receiver performs flawlessly! Very versitile/has provisions for all my gear. I use this in my bedroom and have DVD,MD,CD,Tape, and VHS all hooked up and the HK handles everthing wonderfully. The AVR35 is built very well unlike some other HK models. The AVR35 has adequate power for a small to medium size room for 5.1 surround. Plenty of power in two channel stereo mode. I would recommend this unit. If you can find one used in good order grab it!

Strength:

Warm Sound Great Theater Presence

Weakness:

the remote was not that easy at first but well I should've bought a new one and got a manual with it lol

I purchased my little baby in early 2000,it was a floor model at Circuit City and I was really impressed when the guy said ( I can get it for you for about $200)they were going for about $400 new so I bought mine and bought a 3 year service plan for $40 more then brought it home and set it up and my Brother was so impressed we went to another store and Got him one too!!!!Both perform flawlessly for as long as we have had them and everyone that hears them believe that it's the best sounds they heard.I have mine Coupled with 2 Eosone RSP100 subs and 5 or 6 Eosone RSA100 Cubes.the sound is amazing(better than a theater)I just wish my model had DTS too. other than that I can't complain.I even have movie parties that 15-20 people come too :)

Strength:

Chrystal clear sound, Power is enough for the "Neighbours" Lot''s of configuration options.

Weakness:

Remote control was death on arrival Missing DTS Missing the 5 channel stereo option

I really love this receiver, first i had some poor AC3 sound. But after some changes in the speakersetup it really was great. I did not now that the direction of the surround speakers would make that much difference. In combi with a nice active subwoofer this is real home theater. When I compare it with philips matchline it''s really THAT better. I had the same problem with the tuner which i solved by connecting the cable antenna. I never had problems with heat while it''s placed in a small cabinet. It''s hot in there but no prob''s at all.

Strength:

Nice looking receiver

Weakness:

Overall sound quality

Received a "gooy buy" @ ubid.com for $105 which should have been a tip off to the quality. Extremly poor sound thru Infinity HTS20's with very little surround sound effects to choose from. DVD, CD, & Stereo sound was absolutely horrible. Had this unit hooked up for one-half day, then the unit would not power on & shot craps. So bid.com gets it back.

Definately avoid the AV35 not only for it's poor performance but quality/reliability is another key issue. Why do you think there is so much reman'd Harmon/Kardon stuff on Ubid.com? Because it's crap! Harman/Kardon is definately not what it once was.

Replaced it with a Yamaha.....and BAM...night & day. The Yamaha flat out gets it w/ no disappointments.

Strength:

Clean, clear sound. Really nice to look at. It may be low powered but it's great!

Weakness:

Lack of inputs. Bad "Humm".

I got the H/K around Dec. 99 and it is now in the shop. After using the unit for about an hour or so, it would start to "humm" or "buzz" real bad. I guess it's getting too hot but who knows. I was considering getting a small cooling fan but why should I have to? Thank god for factory warranties cause this would have been in my next garage sale! I'm hoping the thing gets fixed but if not my heart wont be broken. I don't believe the H/K name brings the same level of performance it use to. Go with a Yamaha. If anyone as had the same problems I have please let me know: jakec697@cs.com.

Strength:

Clear, crisp sound... Eye-candy design.

Weakness:

distortion on unused channels, no S-Video

I have a pretty low end setup. I wanted to get something set up for under $1000 and needed 5.1 digital surround sound. As a couple of others have noted, I am also using JBL's Simply Cinema SCS125 speaker set. I also have encountered noise on the unused channels, which does not bother me very much since it is *extremely* quiet compared to the actual signal coming out of the rest of the speakers. Aesthetics were my original reason for purchasing Harman/Kardon, but I definitely will purchase H/K in the future. Overall I would say that this is an excellent receiver, but unfortunately it just does not do quite everything that I would like it to... I am considering purchasing H/K's AVR80, but that is quite an investment at $1,800...

Strength:

Dolby Digital, overall performance

Weakness:

Some inputs don't sound 'pure'. No DTS

Well I've been using this amazing good receiver and I'm very happy with it if you imagine I bought it for $300!
But the price isn't the main reason I like it so much, it is just a very well sounding receiver, though I have to admit the am/fm part isn't that well, but I don't give a @#$ about that since I barely use it. It is difficult to set it up right, but when it is done---> WOW! what a sound blast! Especially with Dolby Digital it is a very good piece of equipment! So maybe it takes time to set it up, but when you set it up good you'll understand the technique of tweaking, it certainly can save you some money! Talking about DTS: not really bad since DTS on DVD is compressed too!If you listen to uncompressed DTS it is better, but you'll have to be in possesion of some theater equipment which is EXPENSIVE, most of the time too expensive:)

I researched about the realiabilty of the Harman Kardon products and came across a site www.ubid.com where they sell thousands of refurbished
Harman Kardon products. That tells you something about the Company and
its product.

May be they are the poineers but they have one on the worst realibilty
and service charges in the industry.

When you buy a high end product you expect it to perform and last as well.

For the same reason I would give this product a Single Star and advice
people to consider reliability before picking up a receiver.
