Strength:

Easy to use: auto senseing tape type Looks cool, great picture, easy to hook up

Weakness:

no chapter index, like DVD's and have to rewind when done

Incredible! Just as clear as HD from sat. Found the D-Theatre HD tapes from Widescreenreveiw.com I have'nt recorded anything yet. So far though it has been great. T2 and Cast Away are awesome in HD.

Strength:

Image quality. The potential for recording images at higher than DVD quality is appealing.

Weakness:

Quality/Workmanship issues noted above. Ease of use needs work-the timer mode recording mode is surprising inflexible. Record one progam, or just one program at the same time Monday through Friday- that's it.

Mixed bag. On the Plus side, playing the D-VHS Hi-Def DEMO tape that shipped with the unit was stunning - sharp, vibrant, and detailed images. I could just about put my face up against my Plasma screen - it was that impressive. On the downside, my unit could not play or record standard VHS modes out of the box - I had to send the unit to JVC for warranty service. Plus, recording in any of the D-VHS modes from the tuner or from a composite or S-Video feed sometimes resulted in red and green shadows along the border edges of people's faces, depending on background and surrounding color and brightness of the image - doesn't look like a chroma/luma or Y-B-R overly issue, since images still look sharp elsewhere. This is quite annoying when compared to how pristine the Hi-Def Demo tape plays. JVC Warranty Service was unable to duplicate this issue, or so they say. I plan to return the unit to JVC once more and request a chroma adjustment.
