    Strength:

    Small,Plays everything dvd's cdr whatever

    Weakness:

seems dim in sound BUT maybe it's just me (onkyo integra) will tell all (hopefully)

I bought this DVD player because my other sony took a dirt nap.(dvp-s360) It was cheap in price and seems to do the job.BUT... It seemed to be a little bim in sound compared my other one. So my onkyo Integra 5.5 is on it's way.BTY is it just me or has sony really took a dive over the years? IT'S TO BAD!!!

    Strength:

Very good picture considering the modest price. Very quiet once up and going. Good remote. Half decent audio performance for CD playing. Works great as a CD transport.

    Weakness:

Slow to boot up. Buttons on the unit are difficult to use (remote operations is better). Video output via component video seems to have been calibrated way too dark, perhaps to compensate for the fact that Sony TVs are calibrated way too bright from the factory.

Great value. Decent picture quality, nearing the quality of my Cambridge Sound Azur 640D. Nice set of useful features like auto aspect control when the source material is 4:3. Very quiet. I use mine mostly as a CD transport feeding my ADCOM GDA-700 DAC, but it's own audio performance isnt' shabby either.

    Strength:

Picture quality, build of unit, full features.

    Weakness:

Sony tends to be proprietary, eject is slower (but not annoyingly so)

This unit is excellent for the money. I felt like I stole it, but I realize some new technologies are on the horizon (driving prices down). The picture is sharp, and the features are rich. DVD and CD playback are full-featured. Also, the build of this unit is very nice. Well engineered and assembled. This is my first Sony, and it won't be my last.

    Strength:

Video & audio performance Terrific value No failures after almost 1 year (including daily overuse due to children's videos :-) Excellent / sleek looks Good remote

    Weakness:

Slightly slow when powering up On board buttons issue commands slower than the remote does.

As stated by another reviewer, the DVP-NS50P is a great DVD player - especially for the money. I purchased it as a quick replacement to a higher-end Sony player that "failed" after only 1 year of use. The NS50P has a very detailed picture and great overall performance, looks & features. Very good sound when used as a CD player. The only complaint is it's slow to power-up and slow to start playing the DVD... also takes 1 - 2 seconds longer than other DVD players to open and/or close the DVD tray when the on-board eject button is pressed (fortunately when using the remote the tray opens/closes immediately). However, this is a very minor flaw and otherwise the player's performance is solid.

    Strength:

Plays just about anything Inexpensive Compact/light Great picture quality

    Weakness:

A little slow to power up A bit slow to spool up and read discs

(Brand New 2005 Model) I just bought two of these DVD players after shopping around a bit and doing a little homework. I didn't want to spend much but I wanted lots of features. These players will play just about anything. All formats of DVD, CD and also MP3. The only thing it doesn't decode is SACD (and maybe DVD-Audio, not sure). I wanted to stick with Sony because I knew that the remote would operate my Sony TV right out of the box without having to program it. The player is very light and compact. A lot of the less expensive DVD players that I was looking at had 8Bit/54Mhz DACs (Digital to Analog Converters) these players have 12Bit/108Mhz DACs which is supposed to offer better picture quality. It's got progressive scan on the component outputs and has a coax digital audio output. It does not however offer an optical digital output. My only gripe is that it's a little slow turning on and powering up. It's also a bit slow spooling up and intitially reading a disc. It's got an excellent picture. Overall, a very decent inexpensive DVD player that offers lots of features at a low price.
