Strength:

overall sound, price, one of the best values out there

Weakness:

lack of bass

If you want good speaker but don't have an audiophile buget for them, you simply cannot beat these Sonys. The sound is impressively loud & clear. The highs are slightly harsh, & you will need a sub to assist the bass, but at 279.00 for both towers, this is to be expected. Equally useful for music & home theater, these speakers are a godsend for those of us who must spend the majority of their audio buget on trivial things like food & shelter.

Strength:

Mid-range makes for excellent music listening and I listen to everything from Aaron Copland to New Found Glory to The Beatles.

Weakness:

Some Subwoofer help is required to give movies more clean realistic bass

I have only recently begun pursueing home audio more seriously than pre-packaged surround sound, and as such I cannot really budget for the system of my dreams. That said, I enjoy the sound out of these speakers very much. For close to two years they have given exceelnt midrange reproduction along with great high end sound that only occasionaly goes tinny and bass that hits hard albeit slightly harder on some frequencies than others. While I am looking to upgrade as soon as my budget will allow I would highly recommend these speakers to anyone who, like me cannot nescessarily afford the system of their dreams at this point.

Strength:

Mids Highs and Volumes Great Value

Weakness:

Bass Suggest using with sub

I got these speakers from best buy on clearance for 180 buck just because the box was open. There was not a scratch on them and they sound great. For the price these speakers are the best on the market. The midrange is great and highs sound great. Volume is loud with a 200 watt handling. The only drawback is that the woofers and bass can sound a bit muffled at times.

Strength:

Good overall sound, especially midrange and bass. Great value! (especially if not bought at BBY)!

Weakness:

Highs a little harsh. Definitely mass produced for the consumer market... (but what do you want for the price?)

A good "cheap" pair of speakers! ($180/pr.+shipping) Decent bass, though a little boomy at times. Good midrange & clarity, especially for many female vocals (though not as good as my Infinity Overture 3's, as expected). Highs a little bright and sometimes harsh, but nothing that a little equalization can't cure (same goes for the bass). On a minor note, I did notice quite a bit of port noise for very low frequency tones (~25-35Hz) on a test disc, but nothing I think you'd normally notice. Sounded better than more expensive JBL's and Yamahas that I listened to. Overall, very impressive for the price range. Didn't think that Sony could do it. Very respectable (even w/o a x-over

Strength:

Cost,looks,sound,price.

Weakness:

For the money and the way they look there are no weaknesses.

I bought these speakers to replace the Sony cubes I was using for my surround sound system. When I hooked them up and started to play T2 I never realized how much information I had been missing. With my two Yamaha 150w subs and these new Sonys the whole room was rocking. And now any music played sounds really good. Of course there are a lot of speakers that can blow the sonys out of the water, but for money and the way they look, nothing comes close. You can;t go wrong with these speakers.

Strength:

Loud bass and fair overall sound. Not a bad price.

Weakness:

Bass is boomy, midrange from fair to muddy, highs are metallic and sharp. Lack of a crossover.

I purchased these speakers because I had a pair of 3 year old Yamaha towers, which I loved, that went bad, and I had the extended warranty at Best Buy, so I had to replace them there. Unfortunately, my tolerance for mediocre speakers has gone down in recent years having been exposed to higher-end speakers, so it was hard finding something at Best Buy to satisfy me. That being said, I still was very disappointed with these Sony's. There were the main channels in a home theater with the matching surrounds and center speakers. The highs were very metallic and harsh and the bass, though loud, was muddy. The midrange was pedestrian at best. Female vocals were sibilant, but male vocals sounded distant, as if the vocalist was singing behind a pillow. The speakers performed much better used as part of a home theater for movies. Explosions were quite force, if a bit boomy. I truly believe the earlier review that said no crossover was hard-wired into these speakers. The drivers seemed to run into each other on the sound spectrum, i.e. the mid-range would “bleed” into the woofers and vice versa. You really can’t ask too much for speakers at this price, but I have heard much better speakers at or near this price. If you are shopping at Best Buy I would urge you to spend a little more and go with the Yamaha’s, even if you have to get the smaller ones. If you want inexpensive speakers for casual listening and movies, these will work just fine. If you are into intense listening for music, with an ear for detail and clarity, I would stay away from these speakers. While not “bad” per say, they are very mediocre. If you are looking to spend around $300 dollars for a pair of main speakers, but a pair of high-end bookshelf speakers and add a subwoofer later. There is a huge variety of quality bookshelf speakers in that price range that will sound infinitely better than these speakers.

Strength:

Sound and build quality, looks, high frequency responce.

Weakness:

Could have a little more bass.

I am very impressed with the sound quality of these speakers, definatly the best for the money. The bass can be a litte weak in a large room be sure you put them near corners, or use a subwoofer. The highes and mids are very realistic and clear and dont hurt your ears. About a month after I got these the midrange and tweeter in one of them blew out, im not sure why, my amp has plenty of power so ut wasnt clipping and i didnt play them too loud. I opened them up to replace the blown drivers and found that the magnets are all pretty small but the sound quality makes up for that. Since I replaced the blown drivers they have been. These speakers are perfect for DVD audiovideo and SACD audio but sound great with stereo sources too. Compared to Yamahas similar pricier speakers these have better sound quality but less bass. In the 80's Sony earned a bad reputation for its poor quality speakers but they have come a long way since then.
