Summary I bought this 5 disk CD changer at Circiut City last week and I must say that so far I am very happy with it. I also have a JVC receiver, cassette deck and VCR and they all work with one remote thanks to the compulink system. My TV also works with the JVC remote. I was reluctant to invest in CD (yeah, I still have a record collection and lots of cassettes) but it is the year 2000 and digital is definately where its at. I read lots of info on the web about this product and everything was very good, I guess a lot of people like JVC CD players. I especially like the random feature, you can load 5 CDs and it will play a couple tracks here and a couple tracks there until they're all played. Hey, this is my first CD so I'm impressed. The sound is clean and tight without the harshness I've heard on some friends players. There is also a digital output for dubbing on to minidisks. $140 at Circuit City. I think JVC makes the best products for the money - maybe not 'audiophile'- but damn good stuff.Strength Great sound, great features, great price, not SonyWeakness None yetWould you like to Comment? Price Paid: $129.00 from Circuit City Summary My Kenwood (which I only had for 5 months) was suddenly becoming very very sensitive to scratches, and I was noticing that most CD players were also having problems with all my favorite CDs. I tried WipeOut repair kit and honestly I think that made the CDs worse! I went to Circuit City early in the morning with my scratched CDs and none of the sales reps bothered me. I tried almost every model in the store (expensive ones too) and would you believe that this JVC was the ONLY one that played through the skips!!! Right through every skip that every other player had a hard time with! Don't ask me what the hell JVC put in it to make it work, but this thing is amazing!!!As for other features, I guess I just wouldn't expect much for $129, so I don't have many other comments -- everything seems to work fine and it sounds great. The only thing that made me hesitate a little is that the design seems several years old (a little clunky) and I like to have the newest thing. But there really weren't any higher-end models to choose from, and I was so ecstatic that it played the skips that I bought it immediately. Strength PLAYS SCRATCHED CD's!!!!!Weakness No Volume on Remote; A little Clunky/Old-fashionedWould you like to Comment? Join audioReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Price Paid: $129.00 from Circuit City Summary In addition to this work of art, I also own a JVC FS-5000 minisystem that puts out exceptional sound as well. I was considering the Yamaha and Sony equvalent, but realized that when compared to the JVC, it seems as if it were stripped down to an eye, a remote, and scrap metal, thus obviously crappy. I was going to buy the Yamaha but it was sold out so after careful deliberation, I made my choice with the JVC. I have a weak little Sony DAV-S300 (which will soon be extensively upgraded to a nicer system altogether) in which I hook this phenomenal cd player to via an RCA(brand) optical cable. This cd player obviously does not live up to its full potential through this stupid home theatre system, but puts out extraordinary sound anyway. If it sounds great now, it will sound 10 times better coming through a much more powerful receiver. Do not underestimate the power of any audio component of JVC, it will definitely leave you speechless with its great deal of power it has to offer. Any potential buyer who has considered this incredibly refined piece, I highly recommend this to a beginner or even a knowledgeable audiophile who doesn't want to pay an exorbitant amount of money for some apparatus with unknown paramenters, yet a fancy, well-respected name to hide these flaws. You will definitely not regret the purchase of this model.Strength Outstanding sound quality through the optical output. Apparatus and remote are very user-friendly. Quick play transfer from disc to disc.Weakness Grey carousel panel makes black cd player look shabby, fit for a novice. Multitude of buttons clutter the front panel...only cosmetic weaknesses.Would you like to Comment? Join audioReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Price Paid: $129.00 from Circuit City Summary This is a underated sleeper. I listened to high priced Denon, Rotel and even Krell CD players before finding this unit. My last JVC single player lasted over ten years but it was time to upgrade to a player with Digital output. This unit is built very solidly and I hope lasts quite awhile. It operates quietly and changes disks fairly quickly. It makes some of my poorly recorded CDs sound great. It also plays my homemade CDs without any problems. This is an excellent unit for a very low price!!!! Strength Digital Optical output, sounds great- no coloration. Nice and crisp, had no negative impact on soundstageWeakness None so farWould you like to Comment? Join audioReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Price Paid: $109.00 from P.C. Richard's Summary Recently purchases the JVC XL-FZ258 to replace my 8 year old Onkyo 206 which has been skiping. I was in the market for agood quality, "budget priced" CD player.Iam not an audiphile, but enjoy "decent sound" quality. I read the reviews on this page , as well as other sources, and was very impressed with the incredible specs of the JVC. It has a signal-to-noise ratio of 107db!!! This is the beast in its'class. As a result, I selected the JVC XL-FZ258, after comparing it to the TEAC, Technics, and Sony comparably priced models. I am glad I made this choice!! The unit has all the features I need- Random play, direct track access, remote with power and eject buttons!!, optical out. This player sounds phenomenal. Great bass, midrange and highs. It is also built top notch. It has a solid feel, unlike most of the other (plastic) players in this price range. I bought this unit for $109. It is steal for this price. Check it out. You won't be dissapointed. Strength Features/Sound Quality/Build QualityWeakness None so far.Would you like to Comment? Join audioReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member.
