Price Paid: $129.00 from Circuit City Summary This is a underated sleeper. I listened to high priced Denon, Rotel and even Krell CD players before finding this unit. My last JVC single player lasted over ten years but it was time to upgrade to a player with Digital output. This unit is built very solidly and I hope lasts quite awhile. It operates quietly and changes disks fairly quickly. It makes some of my poorly recorded CDs sound great. It also plays my homemade CDs without any problems. This is an excellent unit for a very low price!!!! Strength Digital Optical output, sounds great- no coloration. Nice and crisp, had no negative impact on soundstageWeakness None so farWould you like to Comment? Join audioReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Price Paid: $110.00 Summary I am very disappointed in the user friendliness of this particular cd player. I don't have a lot of experience with rack systems but even my crappy Aiwa mini-system had more brains behind it than this thing. Obviously no one who designed this thing listens to music at home. The biggest complaint I have is that the only time display is elapsed time for that track. No disc remaining or elapsed is offered. Also, when programming a list of tracks to play, no running total time is displayed. I have to use my computer to make playlists for mix tapes and then put all the cd's back in the JVC. Also, once a programmed play begins, you can't skip tracks. When more than one CD's are in the system, the only way to play just one CD is to program all the tracks as a playlist (then you can't skip tracks). Overall it is the most unintuitive interface and will make owning it a nightmare. Other than that the quality seems good enough and maybe if I had a JVC receiver the Compu-Link system would be a nice feature.Strength Compu-Link (if you have all JVC components)Weakness non-intuitive interfaceonly track elapsed time displayed can't skip tracks during a programmed play doesn't display a total time of a programmed play Would you like to Comment? Price Paid: $109.00 from P.C. Richard's Summary Recently purchases the JVC XL-FZ258 to replace my 8 year old Onkyo 206 which has been skiping. I was in the market for agood quality, "budget priced" CD player.Iam not an audiphile, but enjoy "decent sound" quality. I read the reviews on this page , as well as other sources, and was very impressed with the incredible specs of the JVC. It has a signal-to-noise ratio of 107db!!! This is the beast in its'class. As a result, I selected the JVC XL-FZ258, after comparing it to the TEAC, Technics, and Sony comparably priced models. I am glad I made this choice!! The unit has all the features I need- Random play, direct track access, remote with power and eject buttons!!, optical out. This player sounds phenomenal. Great bass, midrange and highs. It is also built top notch. It has a solid feel, unlike most of the other (plastic) players in this price range. I bought this unit for $109. It is steal for this price. Check it out. You won't be dissapointed. Strength Features/Sound Quality/Build QualityWeakness None so far.Would you like to Comment? Join audioReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Price Paid: $115.00 from ecost.com Summary After reading countless opinions and reviews, I narrowed my decision down to the JVC and the Sony CDP-CE345/245. My decision was made primarily on price ($115 including shipping). The features were the same on the Sony's and the JVC.Since I've had the JVC, I have no complaints to report at all. It plays all my CD's (scratched, CD-R's, etc) with no problem. At the moment (12/1/2000), I think this CD player is the best value! Price Paid: $130.00 from Circuit City Summary This is my first CD player. It has never skipped or in any other way failed to recognize a CD. In that regard, the performance has been flawless. But the quality has been awful flawfull. The sound is so tinny and brash. I have this CD player hooked up to a Yamaha receiver, and that only makes things worse. Can you say ear-piercing highs? I am beginning to believe that CD players do make at least some difference in the overall sound coming from the speakers. Or at least I hope so. Otherwise my receiver and speakers really suck. But I am pretty sure they don't. Obviously, the CD player is the weak link. Strength has played every CD I have ever fed it, has programming features for those who like that stuff, remote is adequateWeakness noisy tray, no display dimmer (display is exceptionally bright), and the sound quality is patheticWould you like to Comment?
