Strength:

Great lighting on the remote. Many connections. 2 HDMI Inputs, 2 component video inputs, 3 composite video inputs, 3 s-video inputs and 3 connections for different types of cable. Great Picture also.

Weakness:

when setting your preferences, it seems that it won't save. When i switch the input selector from regular TV to X-Box, picture aspect ratio goes back to factory setting. Also make sure you have a young friend who doesn't smoke with big muscles and a strong back because this tv weighs 163 pounds.

After doing some research and reading many reviews, i finally made my choice to buy this great Tv. I was thinking about purchasing the Sony 34'' XBR960 but after thinking about it, i realized that i didn't need the sony because i would be paying more some connections and features that i would not use. I would not have used the built-in HDTV because i already have HDTV on satellite and plus i would not be able to recieve them anyway because i live in south New Jersey and my local channels are from Philadelphia which is an hour away from me. The Other connections i probably will not use is the digital optical input. Another reason why i decided to purchase the Toshiba because it has 2 HDMI inputs on the back. I already have one in use with my Direct Tv and the other is good to have for the future when they come out with better dvd players with HDMI connections. They few dvd players on the market right now with HDMI connections are just cheap and plain looking right now. I also read bad reviews so far on the HDMI dvd Players out there right now so i will wait for the to get better with the Technology. Another thing i love about my Tv is that it have to Cable in Connections and also one for if you have a cable box. Great thinking Toshiba!!! This is my first Toshiba product ever and i must say i am happy with it so far. I read in Consumer Reports that Toshiba is the best on 34 inch to 36 inch tv's on reliability, JVC was second and Sony was Third. I got this tv because crt based tv's still have the best HDTV look, better the LCD,DLP and Plasma. I was thinking about purchasing Monster cables for the connections, but after reading many users reviews, most people say it's a waste of money and that you are only paying for the fancy package and name. So ordered an DVI to HDMI cable on Ebay for 25 dollars and my High Def channels look great. I would suggest for most people to save themselves about $600 and purchase this tv and not pay for the Sony name. Don't get me wrong, sony is a good company and i have had my Sony tv that's in my bedroom for more than 9 years and still going but i realized when it comes to Sony you are only paying for the name.

Strength:

Features for the price. 2 HDMI and no DVI (DVI was dead in lees than 2 years anyways) True to Life skin tones and colors. Fast switch between display formats. DNR, SVM and Tilt correction manual and auto. Auto detect format manual and auto. Remote has light. It is a BIG DEAL. Friendly size and less weight than Sony.

Weakness:

No DVI (f you are fan) No HD Built-In tuner {In case i go broke) Not safe to hookup to PC Start up is average. No HDMI in the front. Sony has firewire.

I spend about 6 months going back and forth between the Sony XBR960 and the 34HFX84 and came to realize that I would never neeed the built-in thune from Sony, so why pay $600 more?. Shouild you have any problems with the signals, call your cable company to fix those problems, after that the HD picture with the componet input is flawless even digital cable channels come up with a decent resolution. Calibration, you got to be kidding me. Why? If you feel the need to blow money off like that give me a call and I'll take that money. Let me rethink what I said about calibration first. No magic, no science about it. These TVs will not magically look better based on what the "expert" says. If you have a normal or corrected normal vision, then there are numbers posted for each setting that the tv allows you to adjust it to whatever YOU think looks best. I advise that you use Discovery HD Theatre channel, as a reference to the others when adjusting the picture. I have had no problems whatsoever with this set, despite a lot of negative reviews or none at all. The tv is listed at $1599 in most places. Should you decide to go for the ones that are listed at $500, don't say i didn't warn you. You don't know what you might be getting. It really blows to return 160+ lbs. of junk if you are lucky enough to track back the rip-off. Enough of my past bitterness. TV has excellent width for the standard home entertainment cabinets, the depth however is overkill, wish it wasn't to deep. I had no problems placing my center channel on the top (others reported purple fringe)of the tv, perhaps their speakers are not truly magnetically shielded. TV sound is decent from tv channels, it gets better from other sources. At the time of this review, I am waiting for my DVR with HDMI connections, all I know is that you should avoid at all costs running composite or s-video cables. Minimum component, HDMI the definitive way to go. The remote functionality is excellent although I must mention that is way too busy at first, the universal capabilty on it is average since I was not able to control several devices. Viewing distance for this set should not be more than 10 feet or less that six you will see why when you get it. All sources are feeding directly onto the tv, I don't recommend any bypass unless your receiver or equipment is HDMI connected. The cabinet on this TV is very discrete, almost elegant and found it to blend in with the rest of the equipment because the two tones black and silver. TV performs way above what the price is. As I mentioned before, glitches and other annoyances come from the signal of your HD cable box, learn how to reboot it and master it. "Calibration" numbers don't mean much really because we all have different eye sight. I do happen to have 20/20 perfect just in case. The tv menus are a huge improvement since the first HD set came out.
