I’ve read a review of someone who purchased a Toshiba set from “Sight and Sound” of Chantilly, VA and is not happy with it. Just want to tell you that “Sight and Sound” owned by Iranian guys distributes refurbished electronics.

Minor Convergece & pincushion prblems

This is a followup to an earlier review I posted here. My first unit from OneCall was defective due to a puncture in the carton and I refused delivery. They then shipped another one within 4 days. This unit worked well with the exception of some minor convergence , pincushion issues and every once in a while the set would just turn off, losing all of it's picture settings. I called my local service and they didn't know what to do about it and in the process of asking Toshiba what to do, the turning off problem went away. I never had the service company out to fix the minor picture problems which are not really objectionable in normal viewing. Overall now I am very happy with this unit.

direct sunlight washes out the picture

I was prepared to buy the 36" Sony Wega XBR400, but when I went to the store to buy it I was shocked by two things. First, I had read the absolute rave reviews of the Toshiba, but since I live in an apartment, I figured a projection tv would be too big. Wrong! This tv's form factor is much smaller than the massive Sony and a solid stand; it's downright svelte! Second, the picture is just stunning! This tv is absolutely the best available for those who have limited space and who refuse to spend $20k on a fancy projector and screen. So I bought the Toshiba instead {the TW40X81 is identical to the new 40H80 model designation}. I also had the tv professionally calibrated. The result is just plain shockingly good (detail, contrast, 3-D richness, accurate colors). In short, I find this tv to be just perfect and a comparative bargain to boot. Note that I use component video out of a Denon dvd changer.

Incredible picture, 2 component vid. ins, crushes Sony 36XBR400

A bit short

For about the same price as the Sony 36XBR400 the Toshiba 40H80's picture is about twice as good. I have a Pioneer 53 Elite, and the picture is nearly as good, and that's a $5500 TV. Using the component video inputs from a DVD player looks fantastic, and you get two sets of ins. The Sony is decent but quite dark, and lacking the detail of the Toshiba. The Toshiba has 1280 lines of resolution compared to the Sony's 720, therefore, the Sony can not display a true highest quality HD signal (1080i). Has anyone used a stand with the TV, its a tad low for my viewing position. This TV will work well with the Denon DVD player I use. This TV is also perfect for a small apartment or listening room. If you can afford it go with the Runco HDTV, if not this set is hard to beat. Highly reccommened!

Convergence.

This is in response to CCMMAN and to validate EMEKA, the new H80 is dramatically different than the X81. It uses a new progressive scan unit called Vector Prog. which offers a significantly more accurate picture with less artifacting (imo very obvious). The crt's are now 30% longer, making them the longest on the market. Resulting in a much sharper and brighter picture. Add to that the 3-2 pulldown recognition for film stock and seperate picture controls for each input, this RTV is major leap forward from it's predecessor. I have owned all three models and this is by far the best one yet. In regards to poor service from internet retailers, what did you expect? Presumably that what you get when you spend a few more dollars at a local retailer. This is the other side of the coin, take it for what it's worth.

Awkward onscreen menu location

Upgraded to TW40H80 from a 7-year old Toshiba 35". Phenomenal picture via component-connected Toshiba 3109 DVD player on both anamorphic and letterboxed movies. Best $1499 I've ever spent (FRY'S).

Great Picture

I just orderd my 40H80. I saw it in the store properly set up - its a lovely picture. I simply wanted to pint out that the 40H80 and TW40X81are slightly different. The X81 has a taller base (w/ a nice DVD tray down there), while the 40H80 sports some image improvements such as "improved IDSC" (line doubler) and better CRTs . (check the toshiba web site for all diffs.) Either way, I got mine for $1800 which was $80 lower than crazy eddies. I think I did okay...

Amazing picture...never view 4:3 again!!

narrow vertical viewing range (hey..its a RPTV!!)

The set weighs ~135 lbs. Its a great set. The vertical viewing is kinda tights, but the PICTURE is gorgeous (out of the box even). I hemmed and hawwed re: Direct view (XBR400 vs RPTV) I'm soooo happy I went with the 40H80. 2 minutes of viewing GALAXY QUEST in 16:9 splendor was enough to convince me that I did the right thing. even on a 36" XBR, the picture size is much smaller. The rmote control is great (and backlit a cool blue) it controls everything else. There really is little else to say re: this amazing set. Granted, I'm yet to view cable or NTSC (DVD only setup) but there's a conspicous LACK of any scanlines - this is only using a SVideo out! I cant wait to see what picture looks like with component video inputs.

IMHO the only way I can get a better picture is with a plasma screen - which I'm sure is nowhere near the value that this set represents. If you even sort oflike watching DVDs you have to go "wide" and forget everything else direct view (unless its wide $$$$)
