Great picture quality,easy to set-up and move it around as it is on wheels and of course price is fantastic. Also has a very sharp looking attractive cabinetry. Has an aspect ratio adjustment as well.

This review is for the latest model 47WX53,Leons in Ottawa had this on SALE FOR 1900 CDN, they gave me a 90 day price protection and a free technician set-up. Right out of the box the picture was so-so but after about 30 minutes of tweeking the tint,colour,brightness etc it looks great and is $600 less than the similar Toshiba model 46hx83. This TV is a no brainer purchase.

Excellent color, contrast and black level. A superbly detailed picture when using top quality DVD player and DVD's.

Geometry and convergence aren't perfect.

After using the Samsung LCD PLK403W for two years, I was very dissatisfied with the quality of black levels, and also with the screen door effect, which was very visible on the set. I decided to foregoe the convenience of LCD, and get a big, bulky 47" CRT set. I read some good reviews of the Panny on Home Theater Forum(I actually have the newer model, the 53),so I decided to purchase it. After the set was delivered, and I used the AVIA disc to calibrate it, two things immediatedly jumped out: the contrast, the black level and the color was absolutely superb. The set isn't perfect: the nine point convergence doesn't get the set absolutely in line(there is some slight off convergence on the bottom right that no amount of tweaking can fix), and the geometry and overscan are slightly off. But, overall, the picture is crisp, detailed and beautiful, and a wonderful DVD like ATTACK OF THE CLONES or LORD OF THE RINGS is wonderful viewing on this set. I still haven't seen true HDTV on this set yet, but I plan to rectify that very soon.

SKINTONES on regular TV broadcasts

I bought this Panasonic 47wx51c because it was the best picture at a size that would work in my home. I am about to send it back as after having it professionally tuned I was unable to correct the problem that this set cannot handle skin tones.In a regular tv one hour newscast I see skin tones that go from blue tinged then next story they are hot pink next story they are purple next story they are perfect. I have two other TV's that do not exibit this problem and my old Sony 43" Pt that this replaced did not have this problem using the same hookup. I by the way am hooked up to fiber optic cablevision that produced fantastic picture quality on my old Sony 43" PT. I have no problem with picture quality only how it handles skin tones.

I just got the set and love it. I was wondering what tweaks you guys made to the TV to make it look spectacular. I can''t seem to find them on the net anywhere. Can someone help me out?

With the Panasonic 56 DVD player and some silver series component cables and turning on the Progressive scan on the DVD player, I can run the TV in HDTV and it thows an amazing picture

Not compatable with different DVD players

This is the first HDTV that I have purchased and I think that it is phenomenal! The only problem that I have had with it is that I traded in the 56 dvd player for the Cambridge Audio DVD 300 and I was getting noise in the blue,red,and green colours, So I had to get my old DVD plyer back.

Price, quality, built-in screen protector, ease of use

All the tweaking it takes to get it just right, cabinet a bit too deep, not enough space on top to put a center channel speaker securely

Just got the TV in on Friday and immediately hooked up my PS2 with component inputs, also had a DVD with A/V inputs. Big difference in resolution. With this TV, you gotta be willing to put in the time to tweak it and use the right components, like component video for DVD and PS2 or else the image will definitely leave you wanting more. I haven''t hooked up the A/V receiver yet but the speakers (5.1) are all hooked up and ready to go. In summary, an excellent unit which allows a lot of flexibility with a variety of inputs.

Set delivered less than a week ago. Out of the box, picture was pretty bad. As other reviews have noted, factory default settings are way too aggressive. Spent about an hour with the user menus adjusting convergence, color, brightness, etc. After tweaking, DVD picture via component inputs is absolutely stunning! If I can find the instructions, would like to try the service menu adjustments. (Anyone have the web link?) However, it''s hard to believe that the picture could get any better.

As another review indicated below, this set looks absolutelly horrible in the store. I was quite suprised when I first looked at it since I know from experience that Panasonic makes excellent video products. I search the net and found out that the factory default for the set is basically torch mode (Contrast fully up) and since most stores do not bother to adjust their set properly, the set looked horrible. In my search on the net, I also learned that this set was extremelly nice when it was adjusted properly.

I bought the set (Not because it looked good in the store but because of Panasonic's reputation in the area of video) and had it delivered. Once it arrived, I let the set warmed up and adjusted it using Avia. Although I am familiar with the service menu tweaks and the disabling of the Scan Velocity Modulator, I opted to adjust the set with the user's menu only. Using the user's menu only, I am extremelly satisfied with the results.

I use the set mainly to view DVD and 4:3 material since I do not have a HDTV satelitte receiver (yet). The set has 4 mode of operation to display 4:3 material: 4:3, Zoom, Full and Just. I would suggest that you look at these mode in the store. Personnaly, I use mostly the Just mode for viewing 4:3 material and the Zoom mode with a video offset for viewing station when a solid station ident icon is used such as CNN (To prevent etching).

Since nothing is perfect, I would say that this set could have had a better built-in surround. I also own a Panasonic Gaoo (Initial N.American model with the 20W + 20W built-in audio amp) and it's surround was much more conviencing. However, I suspect that most that will purchase this set will be complementing it with a Dolby Digital/DTS received.

In summary, I am extremelly pleased with the purchase and would do it all over again.

NOTE: I mentioned that I had also looked at Sony and Hitachi 43UWX10. The Sony just looked horrible and it was not a simple matter of alignment such as the Panasonic. The Hitachi had potential however I had to pay more for a 43" instead of a 47" plus I had to purchase a stand for the set. Basically additional expenses for no added benefit.

Can't change aspect ratio with a progressive signal.

I am very happy with this HDTV. The picture is much better
than I expected from a projection TV (although it needed some tweaking as mentioned in other reviews here, I used the user menu only) and is as good or better than other more expensive models from Sony and Hitachi. The sound is very good (at least to my ears).

My only problem with the TV is an undocumented feature
which prevents the aspect ratio from being changed while
watching a progressive signal (for example, a signal from
a progressive scan DVD player). This is very annoying
for 4:3 DVDs (TV shows etc...) and non-anamorphic DVD
movies. For 4:3 images I would like to be able to use the
"Just" mode but instead the picture is stretched to fill the screen as in the "Full" mode. For movies that are widescreen but not anamorphic I would like to be able to use the "Zoom" mode so that I get the full image but without any stretching (the picture is stretched by default and you end up with a letterboxed but stretched image).
Unfortunately I had no idea that this problem even existed let alone was a problem on my TV when I bought it (it's explained very well at http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/welcome.html). Panasonic Canada customer support has not returned my 2 phone calls and 1 email sent about this but I suspect that there is nothing that can be done. Anyway, it's not a problem if you don't mind watching DVDs of TV shows and non-anamorphic movies in regular interlaced mode where the aspect ratio can be changed.

On the whole a great HDTV for the price when compared to other companies. I am keeping it but am annoyed that the aspect ratio "feature" was not properly documented (I'll know to ask about this the next time I buy a widescreen TV).

Great picture, HDTV capable, widescreen

Extremely poor picture out of the box...this set NEEDS tweaking.

At first sight, I was not impressed at all with the picture quality on this set. It has severe 'red-push', brightness is set to torch mode and the Scan Velocity Modulator makes straight lines crooked. Found a web site that noted that these problems were correctable through some minor adjustments in the service menu so I checked it out on a set and BINGO!!! Once the tweaks were performed and the set was calibrated with Video Essentials, it looked stunning and was equally good or better than the much more expensive Toshiba that I was originally looking at. Without the tweaks, this set is a disaster...with the tweaks, this set is stunning and, since it came with a free Progressive Scan DVD player, buying it was a no-brainer! If you don't mind wading through the service menu and changing a few settings (3 to be exact), this set is a definite bargain and a great deal! If playing in the service menu makes you weary (it's really easy stuff by the way) then look to the Toshiba sets.
