Strength:

Price. I bought this TV in Feb of 99. At that time the closest 31" was almost 600. I picked it up for 350 on sale! S-Video looks very good for DVD/PS2. For me, it has been very reliable. I''ve moved 4 times since, and it won''t die.

Weakness:

Not the ultimate in picture quality but very acceptable. Why spend more, unless you''re getting HDTV anyways ? The speakers suck and the amplification is weak but I''m using it with a receiver in a home theater so it doesn''t matter. The remote is a throw away.

I bought this TV almost exactly three years ago. It has worked without a hitch the whole time. I didn''t want to spend big bucks on a TV, with HDTV on the way. This was the perfect fit for my needs. Decent performance. S-Video.

I used a 19" RCA which I believe is basically the same model with a smaller screen. I liked that TV as well.

Strength:

Ability to switch to bright lighting mode during daytime viewing (cranks up the contrast) then switch back to optimized personal mode for night viewing. --- Remote is strong --- great picture quality

Weakness:

None

This review is for the GE 31GT720. It is the same TV as the 31 GT740 and the RCA F31317. This TV so far has performed very well. I bought it "open box" at Circuit City for a great low price. I needed to replace a 27 inch set. I have it running with DVD and laserdisc, all through S-Video. I have calibrated it with both Video Essentials and Avia and the picture is fantastic, especially under optimal viewing/lighting conditions. It looks as good as any 600 tube out there, for 1/3 the cost. I don''t know how it will do long term, but I have yet to see any trouble out of it, and I''ve been watching it about 6 months. I use my own HT system, so I cannot comment on the built in audio. Probably it is about what anyone would expect from built in TV speakers, though. If you''re looking for a good tv to view things like dvd, satellite, all s-video sources, this could be the one.

Strength:

Good Price for a 31". Lots of features

Weakness:

Poor sound, Unreliable, lousy on/off button

This is about the largest TV for the least amout of $. Picture is acceptable, sound is not that good. Have had in in the repair shop 3 time due to a power problem. TV has cut out on several occasions.

I think it was the capacitor or power supply. Failed to stay on after the on/ off button was depressed. Come to think of it the on / off button is lousy. Quite often it takes a couple of pushes to get the set to fire up. Remote control keeps losing the VCR program settings

My advise is to spend an extra hundred or two and get a Toshiba or a Sony. I watch movies alot and should not of been so stingy.

Strength:

Definitely the price. At under $400.00, this tv was quite a bit cheaper than other similar tv's. After looking at prices and features including quality of picture, this tv appeared to offer the best value. Picture quality is very good. Not as good as the Sony or Panasonic, but mucheaper less expensive too. The tv itself is attractive in a clean simple style. S-video input is a plus.

Weakness:

The speakers are lacking. The best bet is to route it thru another sound system. Also needs additional inputs. If you hook up your DVD player, you can't hook up your VCR - bad planning.

All in all a great TV for the money. I continue to be very satisfied with the purchase - no buyer's remorse here. If you're looking for a entry level large screen TV, this is a good choice. Hopefully, this set will last until digital TV becomes affordable.

Have had a 19" RCA ColorTrack for 19 years and it STILL works great! Also have a 20" Toshiba that is a pretty good TV.

Strength:

Price is right!

Weakness:

Cabinet is not stylish.

Every now and then you come across a great buy. This 31" TV has a lot going for it.

The picture is clear (Especially with my DirecTV and DVD!) The remote control is universal, but unfortunately it does not support my Denon receiver, or my DVD player. The TV has 3 inputs (S-Video/RCA/Coaxial). The sound system is good, but I prefer going through my receiver.

The cabinet is not very stylish, but the picture makes up for it.

WISH LIST:
Better remote
2 more inputs (S-Video/RCA)

Strength:

nice price, 31" screen, easy-to-use ergonomic remote, VCR Plus, simple set-up and functions, s-video input and audio in/output

Weakness:

Included universal remote not compliant with my Sony, Philips and Aiwa products.

I got the floor demo discounted to $299.00 but when I asked the rep if it had S-video connections, he had to pull it off the shelf to see the back. In doing so, he nearly dropped it & banged the side of the t.v. against a post. Because of the plastic-turned-white bruise he put on it, I actually walked away with this for $279.00.

When I took it home (3 people had to lift it upstairs, so saying that this thing is a *little* heavy is a BIG understatement) it set up easily, even w/o instructions for the set & remote functions. Thankfully, when I called GE that day, they offered to send me a free owner's manual that I received less than 2 weeks after.

By that time, I had this 31" behemoth hooked up through a stereo system surround sound and Philips DVD player. The s-video input gave a pretty clear picture; well, better than what I thought would come from a GE/RCA set.

When I later upgraded my system w/ a Sony receiver, PS2 and 200-disc dvd/cd changer this t.v. took to it like fish to water. Meaning, basically, hooking it up through different types of system set-ups wasn't as much of a chore as it was when I tried to do the same thing to my JVC.

This is my main t.v.: I've got it in my livingroom & it gets more use than any other t.v. I've ever had simply because it's enjoyable to use. My bedroom t.v., in fact, gets more dust brushed off it than the power button turned on from it. When I decided to give this an "Overall Rating" of 5 stars, I felt confident because this t.v. worked far better than I really imagined it would perform. I had initially purchased this as a band-aid: something to tide me over until I really got something nice in the house.

Now, instead of selling it after I get a 43" widescreen in the livingroom, I'll be proud to put this set in my bedroom. Some of my friends and coworkers complained that a set this big should have component input. I believe that component doesn't make much of a difference on a set that's less than 36", because you're not close enough to the t.v. to make use of the difference (believe me, I've looked 'til my eyes watered). Also, some of the reviews included a lot of complaints about the poor built-in stereo speaker volume; solution: use a receiver. It has audio in/output so you can watch prime time stuff with surround sound effects. Problem solved. Also, my Sony receiver and dvd/cd changer remote was able to control this t.v..

If you can find this out there, buy it. If I ever saw this again, I would buy it for someone I knew, just because something this valuable just doesn't come along everyday.
