Tannoy SSub 15 Subwoofers

Tannoy SSub 15 Subwoofers

DESCRIPTION

The Sub 15 5.1 provides a complete solution for Reveal 5.1 surround monitoring. It contains 6 channels of amplification and user-switching of filtering on every channel to allow the internal crossovers to be used, or for frequencies to be determined by an external processor. For sub frequencies a 100W RMS amplifier drives the 380mm (15") bass unit. A 100W RMS amplifier is also built-in for the centre channel, and 4 x 70W amplifiers for the left, right and rear channels.

Strength:

The sub is a monster, the woofer is very stiff and is very good for HT use and some relaxed, laid back music. But for serious listening a other sub would be better, because it isn't the most accurate subwoofer.

Weakness:

The gain knob is super sensitive, you can never set is over 30 % The included power cable is rubbish, but can be replaced for 2 dollars so not that special.

Strength:

Air moving performance when required. Room shaking perfromance.

Weakness:

LFE control not what I expected and need to depend on amplifier low cut filter.

The subwoofer is physically a huge presentation as well as sonically. It is perfect for Home Theater as it does shake the house with great presence. Comparing it to Revel 15" seems not fair as the revel has more than 5 times the power rating during usage and more than 3 time at peak usage. For the price paid it is a smashing sub. The driver is stiffer than expected from a ported design

Strength:

Great value. Solid construction. Designed to complement Tannoy Saturn main speakers, which supply bass from 30Hz anyway, so regardless of which speakers you have, you won't need a larger sub than this.

Weakness:

Makes various objects around the room vibrate alarmingly! Weighing in at 35kg, it is tricky to move around.

Performs the job of subwoofer admirably. It reproduces the feeling you get from the bass drum and timpani at a concert, which speakers alone cannot supply. It fills out the sound of the double basses, and the lower registers of the piano and organ. I have never heard a similar sized subwoofer so I have nothing to compare it with, but it is hard to imagine how it could be any better.
