Strength:

Loud. Powerful. I used mine to test new construction for rattles and squeaks in a 25'x28'x11' room, and needed nothing near the full power of the sub to shake the walls. If you want a sub that you will NEVER have to turn all the way up, this is it.

Weakness:

Not precisely ideal for complex music IMHO. (If you want musical, look at VMPS). And the 60Hz hum and need for service disappoints me, hence the 2 star rating.

Extremely powerful sub - will knock things off shelves, but not real linear. Distinct peak at around 70Hz, and nosedives below 20Hz (which is a surprise given a 15" speaker). Fantasic for movies, less so for music (but if only called upon to handle 25Hz-50Hz will be fine). Mine, though, developed a 60Hz hum whenever plugged in - it appears to be a mechanical (transformer) problem, but also was audible at the speaker. I've had to send the plate amp and transformer back for work - which is a major pain.

Strength:

Ah,big output,may impress visitors.Will Shake the house.Home theater oriented.

Weakness:

Slow,slow did I say slow(not musical).Really slow.

The Earthquake is not a fast, tight, musical sub.Its slow, fat and needs a good diet.On bada bing bada bang movies its A OK.It will shake and scare the unwelcome guests. On music its a horror B movie. Its simply S L O WWWWW.The lack of control that the listener below described must be caused by A the amp and B the mass loaded drivers C tuning of the active/passive driver(often result in slower response). When you listen to the Sunfire range(Mark 2,Signature,Junior)the Sunfires sound much more integrated with the sats. The Sunfire range however is also based on a similar design(better integration)and sounds more musical. The best music subs are still the good ole classic designs around light speaker cones and sealed. The M&K are very musical(fast, tight)but may not impress the BASS freaks on movies. So the verdict is in,if you listen to music go with a
M&K,REL.If you listen to both music and movies the Paradigm Servo 15,Sunfire Signature,Velodyne HGS series will work well.

Oh yes the Earthquake,2/5.

WOW - I'm blown away. Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING compares to this sub. (OK, I'm sure there are, but not at this price).
I'm the proud new owner of a MKIVP15 from Earthquake. I've been going round the local audio shops and have heard nothing that comes close to the sheer presence and power of the Earthquake. Everything about it has impressed me, from delivery time, packing, build quality, finish and the sound? This thing sends shivers through your bones.
I've read some reservations regarding low musical quality with the MkIIs, but there is no sign of this on this model.
This is easily fast enough to keep up with my monitor speakers.
Maybe the only problem with this is that it gives a BIG sound. It needs a little room to breath and a detached house. If you live in a townhouse or an apartment, forget it, your neighbours will come to hate you very quickly...

Strength:

Extreme output levels, very fast and articulate, did I mention scary amounts of bass output

Weakness:

Not the prettiest unit in the world.

I have a SuperNova Mark II and for the bucks, it was the best sub I tried by a wide margin. Slow? Boomy? Not sure what was wrong with the subs the others were trying... though I suspect the amount of output may have overloaded their rooms. This sub got great reviews by some serious audiophile mags, so I tried it and liked what I heard. I have integrated it in with several speakers I use (including a pair of ribbon speakers) and it is transparent and very fast. There are some things you need to do to make it do what it is capable of...

1) Do NOT corner load it! It does get boomy and tends to excite room nodes. Many subs benefit from the gain that corner loading gives you...this one has so much output capability that it is not necessary and corner loading can cause problems.

2) DO play with positioning. Few subs can output this amount of energy, so make sure you play around with the positioning until you get it right!

3) DO use good cables, they make a difference. I use the Wireworld Polaris Interconnects with mine.

4) Play around with the orientation, it makes a difference.

5) Cross it over LOW! Like most subs, it will get boomy if you use it at 80hz, this things is a SUBwoofer...don't use it above 50hz and you'll be happy.

This sub is just flat out scary for home theater use! It sends shockwaves thru the room like almost nothing else I've tried and just doesn't seem to run out of steam. It is also great for music, particularly anything dynamic.

Compared to the other subs I tried...the Sunfire just didn't have the dynamic range. the Bag End just didn't have the output power, nor could it match the speed of the Supernova. The Velodyne also couldn't match the dynamic range...though the Velodyne did match it for speed.

I will admit that I just ordered the new 15" Supernova 4 (which I preferred over the Velodyne HGS-18, it just seemed to hit harder) and (pending a structural engineer's go ahead!) it will replace the 12. I am doing this simply because I plan to move to a larger room in a few years (the current room is 15 X 24) and because...well there is no sane reason. The 12 is gonna go in my home office where I will use it to scare myself playing video games.

I've seen a few of these out there used in the $800 range and have recommended to my friends they buy them, two did and they are very happy. Highly recommended!

I have tested Many Subs this is the worst sub I have ever heard. The distortion and lack of control over the woofer is very disappointing and it is very hard on the ears. It flubs out when listening to DTS and Dolby Digital movies. It's ok with music you just can't crank it loud because it will make the music sound bad. The controls are on the bottom of the woofer, which makes it very hard to fine tune. You have to pick up the sub to make adjustments. Maybe they should have designed the remote better. It does produce a lot of bass but Very! Distorted bass that sounds Very bad. If you are looking for a good Subwoofer with tight accurate bass go with Velodyne FSR 12 or 15 Or HGS 12,15, or 18 with less than 1% distortion Great for movies and Music.

the super nova has to be the loudest sub I have ever heard. Although tough to adjust sometimes the only adjusting youll be doing is turning it down because the sheetrock is coming off your walls. Its very heavy (76lbs) but it has to be or it would bounce around, just kidding. I have listened to the velo's and to the Paradigms but the only other sub that came close was the Sunfire which if you didnt know already is the same basic design just a little smaller. I gave up two top of the line Yamaha YST-SW500s for this one Super Nova and have never had this much power before. I love this sub

Strength:

Very Accurate, Extremely Tight & Fast..Bass you can actually feel. Plenty of power!

Weakness:

None Yet.

Let me just start by saying I have been looking for the perfect subwoofer. As you can see above I have tried a # of Subs.. I have been searching for about a month. I finally found the sub I was looking for.. Plenty of deep, punchy bass. It goes low, can definetly crank out the decibels. Great for music, and great for Home Theater. You can actually feel the room get pressurized on the low end & feel the punch from the kick drum. I am Finally happy I found a sub that is great in both environments.. I thought I would never find a unit that would satisfy me for under $2500. I was not looking to spend anywhere near that, not even $1500. But it is without a doubt, money well spent. In this case, you definetly get what you pay for.... (Not always the case though).. I am sure there are much better subs out there, but they are a lot more money.. But this sub is great, I do not know why you would need a better sub..

Strength:

see my review below.

Weakness:

see my review below.

This is for Andy B. who built his own. What 500 watt plate amp did you use? Is it the switching supply BA-212 made by Earthquake? Also, for $50 what type of cabinet materials did you use? Please don't say MDF because that junk won't hold up well for long with the pressures involved in this sub. That's why Earthquake uses 12-15 layers of Birch as the enclosure material, it's very strong and non-resonant. I'm glad you could build a similar sub for $660, but, considering new ones can be had for $999 with a full warranty and a great finish and proper materials the $660 doesn't look so good after all. Just my opinion. Don't take this to seriously, I'm just giving you a hard time.
