Strength:

Highs, mediums and some lows (low to 60hz) Very nice looking (with or without grille) Easy to position anywhere. Long last, very well-built loudspeaker.

Weakness:

Needs a subwoofer to address lower frequencies, specially for movies

After reading all reviews from these speakers I decided i would go for them... It was very pleasing to know that the former reviews were indeed very true! These loudspeakers are truly awesome! Highs and mediums are astonishing! Lows are very good for such a small woofer and the housing contributes a lot! Its has a very nice looking and its easy to locate anywhere since they are very slim. I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a long term resistance speaker since they are built to endure!! Go for it if you have the chance!

Strength:

Physically gorgeous Excellent detail retrieval wide and deep soundstaging Excellent value for money

Weakness:

Bass though tight, but not extended. A slight mid coloration, for this price level.

The MX3 represents true value for money. At the price, I strongly believe they are one of the best available in the market today. They look great in light maple with white cone mid/bass driver and stand tall and slim, gorgeous. I partner it with a 30w tube amp and they show no sign of clipping at all. Vocals are excellent for the price level, in fact its much better than higher end loudspeakers manufactured 3 to 4 years ago. Its amazing how much they have technically improved. Bass however suffered. Its there, but its just not extended and the bass presence is not strong. Maybe its the nature of the tannoys to sound lean and clean. I also noticed that it can sound a tad slow, but I think that is due to my system charateristic. One of the strenght of the MX3 that must not be overlooked would be its ability to disappear, even at this price range. The last I heard speakers playing a wide and deep soundstage was the audio physics (masterpiece transducer..). So I got thrown off my seat when I started playing a track from Stacey Kent and all the instruments were widely arranged across the room, with Stacey right there in the middle. Detail level is quite amazing too. In fact its so much better than the epos es22 I used to have, which was almost 8 times its price, but very aged (almost 6 years old). I strongly recommend this speaker to those into vocals, classical, new age. Hard rockers may need to look elsewhere.

Strength:

Tight controlled sound belies it's low price. Striking white driver. Delicate bass is not a weakness on these speakers as they make up for it with dynamics.

Weakness:

Slightly shoddy build. Thin cabinet walls colour the sound severely at high volumes. Take forever and ever to run in.

When I were a lad, I used to buy hifi because it looked good. I bought my first system at 17 with my first wage. It was an Aiwa Midi system which came in separate parts although, due to their common interface, could not be used separately. It had lots of flashing lights and my inexperienced ear thought it sounded great. Ten years later, I have found that, while I like my hifi to look good, it's not there to be looked at. Imagine my surprise however, on popping in to my local hifi dealer and seeing Tannoy Mx3's with a light wood finish, striking white driver (apparantly a porcelaine impregnation of some sort), and an equally striking silver grille to cover the whole thing up if you really wanted to. I was ready to pay the money there and then, but experience told me I should listen to them first. I quickly dashed up to the counter and asked for an audition. Ten minutes later, they had recreated my system in their demo room and I was settled listening to music I'd never heard before. The only album I could find was Bjork's Post album which I have but have only played once. I compared them with B&W speakers at about twice the price and there was a negligable amont of improvement. So I went to the checkout and parted with £220 and left with a gleaming new set of speakers (I'd only went out for a pint of milk!). I got home, unpacked them, and bi-wired them with the new DNM Reson wires which I also purchased, put on a CD and settled down to listen..... I was greeted with harsh treble, practically non existant bass and serious dissapointment. However, I was aware that they would need to run in, so I chanelled the VCR through them and settled down to watch TV for the rest of the day. The next day I put the radio on all day while I was at work, and more music and more TV. 3 Weeks passed and no improvement. I had had enough! I fetched out the boxes ready to take them back to the shop. I sat down one last time to hear them screach at me and notice that they WERE slowly changing and WERE starting to become musical. I persisted with them hoping that they would come round. Now, 6 months on, I can say that they sound excellent, are still improving and show incredible treble and midrange without screetch or squawk. The bass is not very strong but is deep and precise. Shy bass is made worthwhile by the speed of the speaker. Bass drums for instance are audib

Strength:

Transparency, very clear mids, neutral and very low bass (taking the size of the driver into account.) Imaging (thanks to the dual driver architecture,... and the sand)

Weakness:

Low bass is accurate but not powerfull enough to play house music. But you don't need accuracy there => plug the sub !

I won't be long. It was long enough last time ;-) (see below) Just 4 words: FILL THEM WITH SAND. Since I did so, the bass quality improved a lot. The bass is not louder, nor deeper, nor even really more accurate. It's just that all vibrations of the box are now correctly dampered (30 pounds of sands in each box killed every possible resonnance) As a result, the coloration of the sound has been reduced. What I did not expect but was very striking after the "surgery" is that imaging improved a lot. Most probably because the side boards of the box do not radiate anymore. The result is stunning and everyone should fill them from the beginning. I waited 8 month because the exercise looked irreversible and I regret having waited so long.

Strength:

Good finish. Peppy all over and fairly well balanced. Nice clean treble and plenty of bass. Soundstage/imagery is good.

Weakness:

Can sound boxy if badly positioned.

Not quite up to earlier profile models, but excellent none-the-less. If you can find these for a good price in the USA you''re on to something. Overall, they shine way brighter than any similarly priced US made garbage (as personified by Polk).

Strength:

great midrange

Weakness:

weak bass

I listened to a lot of different speakers with prices up to 650 Euro. I ended up with the Tannoys. The price/value is great. Biwire these speakers and fill the bottom chamber with sand (see pascals posting below). Take a CD with jazzy vocals (like Dee Dee bridgewater)and enjoy a natural sound, you do not get with any other speaker in this price class.
