I bought these for use as my quiet speakers while living in an apartment. My 15" Lansings were too much when I wanted to listen to music or the tv in stereo, without headphones. I have also used these connected to a computer and the computer just didn't have the power to drive them. My Onkyo does a go job. The bass is nothing to write home about but it is pleasant for light jazz and vocals. You should always test drive before buying and fo myr purposes the LX7 are fine. Sometime inexpensive can be a good deal.

Strength:

those beatiful linaum tweeters they sound soo sweet. they do take some power though, they are not very efficent especially with the extra dampening. the biggest benefit is making the enclosure sound more solid. im running 130 watts a channel with 7 channels and thx ultra 2 they dont overtax them especially with the base management with DTS or DOLBY EX i set all speakers to small and am running a velodyne cht-15

Weakness:

the enclosures, the lack of efficiency i bought these on ebay really cheap so it was a great deal

The pro lx -7's like the other pro series speakers biggest problem is a weak enclosure. I own lx-10's lx-8's lx-5's and a mathcing cs-5 center speaker. the biggest improvment i did was lining the enclosures with dynamat extreme and filling them up with more insulation. i also took the front plates off and put dynamat on the fronts and reinstalled the plates. what a huge difference ! for cosmetic reasons i also painted the backs a flat black.

Strength:

Nice smooth bass, with high freqs.

Weakness:

If pumped to the ulimate max, you start to hear a click, (the woofer moves too much leading to a possible damaged speaker)

Te PRO LX7 are great for your money, i love these speakers. They are hooked up to a budget amp, (sony STR-DE345) and bridged of a optimus 100Watt SUB WOOFER :). I got the speakers for a cheaper price because i work there and i''m trying to track more down around Australia. Overall UNREAL

I have reviewed these, and I can only come up with 3 stars. They are reasonably smooth, the price is the best part. Oddly enough, I am not a real Shack fan, but they fail to follow thier own advice for optimus and mach speakers. Just like the garbage speakers Japan had produced for years, they stuff a woofer in an enclosure too small for deep bass. Just a few bucks more, and a re-thought out enclosure would open up the bottom end output. They really don't do much past getting loud... Small Infinity, Boston Acoustics,Cambridge and signet are a better value for quality vs quantity of sound.

I bought a set of four for $160, and a CS-5 center. For movies, this setup yields seemless timbre-matching. The treble is slightly soft, yet still detailed, a trait I find absolutely positive when watching movies, which tend to have a harsh treble range. Those tweets also play incredibly loud without losing their composure, something which can't be said for most tweets in bargain speakers. The upper bass is a bit exaggerated. I give these speakers a score of 4.5 for movies, and a 3 for music. The value rating I am forced to give is considering it's retail price. At $40 each, it is much more of a bargain.

After reading a few reviews below I told myself that I must get a pair of the LX-7 to try out. The price sure seems right--$30 each on discontinued sale. After calling a couple stores and checking their inventory database, I found two stores in the entire Chicago area that still have them. Each store only has a pair. One store is 40 miles away and the other 20 miles away from my house. Needless to say I called the nearer store and told the manager to set the speakers aside for me. One hour later I was there to pick them up. The manager was surprised to see me so soon and commented that I must really like these speakers to have come to the store so quickly.
Once I got home, I placed the LX-7 into my second system which consists of Harman Kardon FL8300 CD changer and AVR 25II receiver driving the PSB 400i speakers. They are placed on 22" metal stands, 3' from the back wall and 4' from the side walls. Speaker wires are Nordost Flatline Gold II.

I loaded up the changer with a variety of music and pressed play. After two hours of listening, here is what I heard: accurate midrange, clear and extended high (more air than the PSB 400i) and decent bass output without boominess (doesn't go as low as the 400i though). The LX-7 throw a very believable soundstage with pinpoint imaging. Listening to Patricia Barber's Modern Cool, I can feel that she's in the room singing two feet in front of the speakers. After a few more hours of listening I boxed up the PSB 400i speakers and put them away.

I feel very fortunate to have purchased a pair of the LX-7. To me they are a great bargain. I recommend that if you can find them, buy them immediately.

I bought a pair after reading the reviews here. I am glad I did. True, they are not the hottest thing going in their size range, but they are more than very good for the price. I find it interesting that they really sound fine when driven by a vacuum tube amp. If you're interested, act soon, as I had to purchase floor models.

Strength:

Great price.

Weakness:

Midrange? Where?

Ok. First of all, I simply like reviewing this Radio Shack LX series, it's overall the best value in existance, or at least was in existance. I've owned just about every LX speaker made one time or another just because they were so cheap and made a good garage speaker, etc. I still own a pair of these LX-7 speakers. They offer darn good sound for the price. But I will not praise them as I would other LX speakers. They have a harsh high-end that fatigues the ear after a few minutes, and the mid range is a bit muddy with a big hole right between approx. 1700-2400 HZ it seems. They produce a decent amount of relatively low bass(I measured a response down to about 45 HZ -2 DB at my computer desk, that will of course vary depending on the room). I use the speakers for my computer, I have a big L desk and their is plenty of room. And since these speakers have been previously laying around in their boxes, I figured it was better to use them than pay $250 for the Klipsch computer speakers. These things sound a little better in some respects. I don't need a high-end sound system on my computer, that's what my home entertainment system is for. If your looking for a cheap and relatively nice sounding full range speaker for a small room, get a pair of these if you can find them. If your looking for something to play Bach on, take out your VISA and be prepared to pay at least $400 each for a speaker this size that is decent. These LX-7s will not do for that purpose. Most easy listening and cotemporary music sounds good though.

Optimus lx-10I am currently testing this speaker in a surround setup in an experiment to establish a boderline audophile set-up on tight budget. My idea is that the linaeum tweeter has acceptable carateristics to image serious center channel DOlby and AC3 due to its dipolar diffusion caracteristics. When one studies the THX concept carefully, we begin looking for a speaker that can image human voice without being located in a pin-point spot. I will attemt to mount the lx10 horizontally, very foward atop my 52" pioneer rear proj.(to avoid screwy resonances from the tv box), Furthurmore- I will remouve the linaeum tweeter and remount it in a favouable center spot. Will share results for other crafty guys as I progress.

Radio Shack has replaced these speakers with a shorter, squattier version using the same tweeter and an injection molded 8" woofer in a ported enclosier. They are obviously shooting for the bookshelf market, however this speaker is way too big for that. On the other hand, subbing the 8" woofer for 7" is all the difference in the world. I happended upon a Radio Shack in Seattle that actually had a descent home audio demo set-up, a rare thing for most stores. These things sound real good considering their price, they'll sound great later because at least once a year Radio Shack has a killer speaker sale, so wait. I've heard the LX-8, it is superior to the old LX-7 especially in the bottem end. They aren't very attractive though and might not sit steadily on tall stands. The best thing to do is to audition these and other Optimus speakers at home because I'm sure that if and when you go to R-shack you'll find the speakers crammed in the corner with the R/C cars and various antennea, electronic pennybanks, etc. Radio Shack wants to cater to the telephone and computer crowd, which seriously detracts from a greatly upgraded line of home speakers. My rating is for performance alone, I give Radio Shack a half speaker for marketing and service.
