Well,

after I upgraded everything except speakers in my system, they clearly became the limit. I was in the market for great, maybe expensive speakers when I had the chance of getting a pair of these Mirage M-390i nearly free.
Hooked them to my Rotel pre + Nikko Alpha 230 power amp and started playing a few reference cd's with my combo Marantz cd-%/ as transport + home-made DAC.
They are really exciting speakers, the detail is good, the tonal balance is as correct as you can expect with speakers under 1000$ and they really have tight bass for their size. They are quite small and narrow for floor-standers, but they're heavy and really well built.

I had my best friend who's a sound engineer (recording-mixing) with sensitive ears and who's very critical (his father owns an - over $40 000 stereo only - system carefully chosen so we have a good comparison point when we evaluate systems). He was really surprised at what my system could do once we had tried different placement for the speakers and put some damping stuff in the room's corners.
We tried a few other speakers we had at hand in the same condition and the Mirage were definitely great.

Even not considering the price, they are good speakers and a good entry point in the audiophile world :)

Those Mirage are one of the best value for the price when it introduce. There traditional setup creates warm and wide mid range. Your ears will still wanted to listen to them after hours of music. The setup also allows you to do Bi-amp / bi-wire. If you do have those speakers be sure to get them at least bi-wire. That is when the speaker comes to live. The response and bass dramatically improves. For the price of bookshelf you are getting a performance of mid tower.

I believe those speaker introduce in the late 90s and that was the best years for Mirage. Since then they have shifted there focus to home threater.

Strength:

Excellent bass response
Very detailed and accurate
Crisp highs
Bi-amp compatible
Quality drivers
Front ported design

Weakness:

Only available in black
Hard to find
Not pre-drilled for spikes

The 390is often referred to as the poor man’s Totem Arro and for good reason.
Both speakers are of the same two way; front firing design and have surprisingly solid low end response with the type of smooth and detailed highs you would expect from a two day design.

The 390is uses very good quality drivers. The injection molded 6 ½” woofer can track down all the way to 35hz that is a full 5hz lower than the Totem Arro’s that are well regarded for their lively bass response! The highs are crisply handed by a full liquid cooled 1” titanium tweeter that can take the frequency response up to an impressive 22kHz once again besting the Totem Arro in this category.

Sensitivity is rated at 89db; making the Mirage a more efficient speaker than the Totem that measures in at 87db by comparison One other nice feature of the Mirage is that it has an 8ohm impedance rating making it easily driven by more modest amplification whereas the Totem has a more demanding 4ohm rating. Both speakers are bi-amp compatible and have full three way binding posts.

The Mirage 390is has very good quality drivers and a nicely sized and constructed cabinet for excellent sonics. Bass response is unbelievably solid for a speaker of this size and yet is still boasts the type of detail and accuracy you would expect from a bookshelf studio monitor.

If you like a very detailed speaker with impressive low end you will be hard pressed to find better value. For the money these typically sell for used they are hidden gem in a crowded market.

Strength:

Great all arounders,. Excellent midrange

Weakness:

could have better bass, ok considering 6" driver

I have used these speakers with everything from a 15 year old Kenwood integrated to a CJ CAV50. They play really great off low powered amps like small rotels or nad. They continue to sound better when you improve your system around them. The midrange is revealing and the trebble a little laid back. Bass is tight and gets lower if you put power to them.
Highly Recommended.

Strength:

Good allrounders. Nice sweet treble

Weakness:

Looks a bit dull

They may not be the most eyecatching of speakers, but they sound good.
The treble is a bit on the laidback side and the bass doesn't go all that deep, but the 390Is's are fabolous allrounders. Feed 'em any type of music and they will respond well.
