I Bought these set of speakers for only 10 Euro's, thats less than 8 pounds, They are sick, I think the guy who I bought it from was even sick because he sold it to me for 10 euro. I thought it wouldn'd perform a high quality cause it was SO cheap. But they were better than I ever heard before, the bass is amazing, I listen much dubstep and house so it really works for me.

I bought these speakers from a woman off of Craiglist for $60 for the pair and it was a STEAL!!!! They are incredible for the amount of money I paid. I recommend stalking around craiglist to see what kind of deals you can snag as well.

Strength:

Good overall range.

Weakness:

Boomy base, closed (not-so-open) midrange and slightly crowded sound. Imaging is also slightly blurred.

Th speakers are a very good value for the price. They are sensetive, so can be driver by weaker amps loud enough. However, they are boomy and midrange is not so open. Highs are good. There is a touch of harshness and imaging is also not so good. My opinion is, if yu really want good sound, look elsewhere. But for a budget, they are really good. I am driving mine with a harman/kardon AVR5 and guage 16 monster cables. Someone sugested using guage 10, though I am a bit doubtful.

i had a set of these speakers for 7 months and thought they sounded great even though the bass was weak. i then up graded to jbl sva 1600's. the sva's blew the tlx's away. the sva line of speakers has been discontinued, but are still available at ubid for $100-$200 a piece. the sva 1600's originally sold for $900 each and were discontinued due to price. if you can find a set of sva 1600's, buy them and dump the tlx's.

After I dropped a not so subtle hint, my wife bought these speakers for me for Christmas. She got them at Wards and practically stole them. After a knock down drag out with a new employee and the mgr., she was able to get them for $75.00 per speaker! They were listed at $199.00 per. I hooked them up Christmas Day to my Denon Receiver and they sounded great. I went out and bought some heavier speaker cables but I'm not sure if it made a real big difference. The Tlx 171's have a decent high and mid range and an OK bass range. I'm no audiophile but I can say that these JBL's, for the price, are hard to beat. I've listened to a lot of different speakers over the years, high end to low end. Big $$ does not always assure great sound. Of course buying speakers is a subjective process. I'd recommend the 171's for their good sound and great value.

I don't have audiophile ears or budget so I was looking for the least expensive system that reproduced my favorite music (jazz, light rock, classical)cleanly and could also be used for home theatre. I got the TLX 171's at Best Buy for $199 each plus a free center channel (which I needed anyway). I set them up with a Technics reciever and CD player, as well as connected to my TV and VCR for home theatre. For the money they have good midrange and high response. Bass is tight but lacking in the low frequencies. I would recommend a sub. Perhaps the TLX 151's with a sub would have been a better deal. I can't recommend the TLX 181's as the bass seemed very boomy to my untrained ears. I think this is a good compromise system for a small budget. It sounds very good with Dolby Surround in the 3-speaker mode when listening to movies, although for big effects you want the sub. If you're not rich, I recommend it or the 151's.

Great pair of speakers for the money. Got these at BestBuy for $318.00. With such a wide range and deep bass (8" woofer), music comes alive and movie sound effects are fantastic with Dolby Digital Rcvr/ DVD.
