Summary:
This is the finest loudspeaker I have had the occassion to listen to.(I have heard many of the BIG GUNs like Watt/Puppies 5.1, JM Lab Grand Utopia,
Theil CS 7, Soundlab A-1) This a four-way, phase aligned, time aligned design
that has high efficiency (91DB) along with an easy amplifier load (6 ohms,
purely resistive). This is the first dynamic speaker design that satisfied
the electrostatic side of me that wants a speaker that speaks with one voice
very transparently. This is also a speaker that can play at real concert levels
and not compress the sound. It also disappears in the room very well. The only
drawback I saw was that the speaker has no significant output below 30Hz.
For most music this is not a significant problem since this speaker gets
the mid-bass just right.
I tried many amplifiers with this speaker (Krell FPB-200, ML-331, Classe
400, Accuphase A-50, Bryston 7B), but settled on a tube amp Air Tight ATM-2
because solid state does not deliver the "you are there" realism I get from
good tubes. I have also tried and purchased the Green Mountain Continuum
15SW subwoofer. It is great. I think Mr. Johnson knows what he is doing
in the applcation of real physics to the design of his speakers. Highly
recommended
