Strength:

Excellent Pro-Logic decoding. The best sounding stereo performance in its class. Accepts 5.1ch inputs.

Weakness:

Small LCD Display.

Current System: Sony 32ich Wide-Screen TV, Sony 735 DVD builtin DD/DTS decoder), ARCAM AV50 AMP ARCAM ALPHA 8Power AMP (for fronts), ARCAM 7SE CD, PACE Satelite Decoder, B&W LCR6 (Center) B&W 603s2 (Fronts) BOSTON Acustics VRS PROs THX (Surrounds), QED QNECT 2 interconnects QED 25th anni speaker cable. The AV50 sounds awesome. The base produced with the use of the added 8P means NO SUB is required, as the 603s go down exceptionally low on their won. The Sony DVD decodes itself, and has one of the best decoders available inside a DVD player, and the AV50 responds to the signal steering effortlously. In stereo, in combination of the AV50 & the 8P give a poise and control that no surround sound amp I have heard can make, unless you spend over £1500. (and I have heard a few, as I worked p/t in a hi-fi store). The 7SE CD player matches both amps tonally, giving a sound which is full and controlled, but with an amount of detail which makes the soundstage superb. I would highly recommend the AV50, but if being used for home cinema, adding in power amp would be a recommendation for added excitement and base. I have built this system over a few years, and at present cannot find anything which beats it, to my likeing anyway. DTS sounds great!!! But beware the neighbours

TRADED IN AN ONKYO 656 AFTER A COUPLE OF DISAPPOINTING MONTHS WITH THAT UNIT. AS I HAVE YET TO MAKE THE JUMP TO AC3 THE AV50 MORE THAN SATISFIES MY NEEDS AT THIS TIME. I WAS LOOKING FOR EXCELLENT MUSIC REPRODUCTION AS WELL AS PRO LOGIC DECODING WITH AN UPGRADE PATH FOR AC3/DTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE ARCAM EXCELS IN TRUE STEREO AND ALSO PRO LOGIC. IT HAS A 6 CHANNEL IN FOR FUTURE UPGRADES AND I CAN ADD ARCAM ALPHA 8P POWER AMPS TO BI-AMP (AS FUNDS ALLOW) ALL FIVE CHANNELS IF I WANT. FOR NOW I HAVE A MODEST SET UP OF PSB ALPHAS IN THE FRONT, PSB CENTURY 200ci CENTRE,AND AN OLDER SET OF PARADIGM ATOMS IN THE REAR AS WELL AS AN OLDER ENERGY EPS 12 SUB. DESPITE THIS MODEST SPEAKER ARRAY MY CONSTANTLY IMPROVING SYSYEM REALLY SINGS WITH THE ADDITION OF THE AV50. I THINK MY MOST IMMEDIATE UPGRADE PATH WILL BE THE TOSHIBA 3109 DVD PLAYER AND SOME PSB STRATUS BRONZES FOR THE FRONT AND MOVE THE ALPHAS TO THE REAR. ALL IN ALL THE AV50 IS A WHOLLY SATISFYING PIECE OF KIT. ALSO THE LOCAL SHOP WHERE I PURCHASED WAS EXCELLENT (LONDON AUDIO). I'M SURE THEY'LL BE GETTING MUCH MORE BUSINESS FROM ME AND WHOMEVER I CAN SEND THEIR WAY. FOR MORE DETAILED REVIEWS OF THIS AND OTHER ECXELLENT ARCAM PRODUCTS VISIT THEIR WEB SITE.

Strength:

underestimated power, great for surround and 2 channel audio, a true rarity in most integrateds.

Weakness:

setup can be a pain for those with little patience, remote cannot be used with other components, no s-video but seeing as s-video switchers are not a pricey item this can be forgiven.

i can say with all honesty that AV50 is the best investment i made in my system, this is a true performer in every sense of the word. i probably split duties on it between video and audio only and it outperforms most integrateds in its class. it may lack a tuner which would dissapoint some, but i feel a built in tuner would make it sound the same as all the others, either too bright or too flat!! plus you can add up to 3 additional amps!!, presently i have an Alpha 8P power amp i am using to bi-amp my speakers, eventually i would like to add 3 Alpha 10's for some serious power!!
