Strength:

Excellent performance. Tuning scale is lit with a soft green light, fantastic at night.

Weakness:

No presets, but if you can live without them. you're laughing.

This is a superb tuner (made 1979) and a bargain too at current ebay prices. The T-1 is a very sweet sounding tuner, no harshness at all at any point in the soundscape. It is in no way fatiguing to listen to. Perhaps the best way to characterize it is that you don't notice that you are listening to an FM broadcast, all you are aware of is the music. It has an extremely good ergonomic layout. Controls are smooth to operate, particularly the tuning knob. Tuning is a cinch. As you hit a station, the dial indicator gets brighter, then a quick touchup on the tuner meter and you're right there. OK, it's got no presets, I like presets so I miss them on the T-1 but you can spin the tuning knob across the dial easily, no problem. I'm using the T-1 in Sydney, Australia where the FM stations are not that close together, so selectivity is not that big an issue. It is a very sensitive tuner and pulls in low powered stations very well. The vintage analogue tuner market is full of hype. There is no need to spend megabucks on a Kenwood, Pioneer, Sansui or any of the other fancied tuners. They are really not that much better than the Yamaha, if at all. What the T-1 offers in spades, is great performance, very good construction and a really cool look. One brilliant tuner!! I know it is a cliche to say they don't make them like this anymore, but it is true. The T-1 is solid, solid, solid all the way, in every respect.

Strength:

Clean sound, locks signals and very musical.

Weakness:

No presets....but I'm not a channel changer or button pusher.....at least not at home.

This tuner is just a well built component. No presets, but the quality of the signal and sound more than makes up for this inconvenience. The tuner adjustment knob 'feels' controlled and locks on weak signals well. I wish newer components had the weight and feel of older quality components like this one.

Strength:

Clean, easy to read dial/scale. Nice "weight" and feel to the tuning knob. Built in calibration tone button. Has "Signal Quality" and "FM Strength" meters for accurate tuning.

Weakness:

None

I haven't had the luxury of comparing this to other tuners so I'll write about my personal experience with this tuner.

I went from a receiver (Old Marantz 2230) to the Yamaha and was really immediately impressed with the sound quality. The midrange and high frequencies were much clearer and detailed.

I haven't had any problems at all in the 20 plus years I have owned this. The stations remained locked on, they do not drift, no internal lighting for any of the meters or dial have burned out.

My ownly complaint is I would have preferred a standard "F" connection for the 75 ohm antenna connector. You have to strip off a section of the antenna cable and screw it down.

Strength:

I have it for over 20 years and it is still going strong. I have no big complaints at all concerning its performance.

Weakness:

The radio station needs to be retuned from time to time.

A great product from out of the past and for my purposes, still doing the job. I have modern audio equipment except for this tuner.
