Bottom Line:
I found this gem at a second hand store. I didn't know a thing about this particular unit but bought it for the price (and curiosity). After hooking it up I spent almost 2 hours immersing myself in the warm rich sound of this tuner. I had no idea a separate tuner could make an FM/AM sound sooo good. My current Yamaha and Denon doesn't even come close.

Bottom Line:
This tuner may very well be Sony's best. Made around 1988, its specs either match or beat the ST-SA5es which costs about twice as much in the used equipment market. The sound is rich, full and detailed. I would put it on a par with the Yamaha T-2, Luxman T-117, etc.. The built quality is superb, solenoid switches have a firm positive feel and the multi-color display is well tastefully done.

Bottom Line:
Very straight forward high quality FM tuner from Sony. This tuner compares favorably with my vintage Marantz 150, the one with the scope, and my Dynaco tube FM 3. The tuner has a smooth tube like sound quality. Most digital tuners sound rather dry. This one sounds very musical and has all of the convenience of a modern tuner.

If you can find a mint condition used Sony 730ES tuner, you are getting a better quality tuner than most built today. If you already have one, hold on to it.
