Bottom Line:
This deck has quartz-locked 2 motor direct drive. No detectable wow or flutter after all these years. Technics had pretentions of becoming a high end maker at that time, and it shows in the quality of this unit. It's outlasted the Nakamichi deck that was supposed to replace it (which is off for repair -again). Clean sound, good controls.

Bottom Line:
This review is for the original R-85 which I purchased in 1979 and gave to my sister, because I replaced it with an AKAI.

There's not a lot you can say about a deck that's nearly perfect and this deck has it from ergonomics to sound. It sounds nearly as good as the best turntables/cartridge combos and costs much less. It has solenoid controls that don't impart the noise to the recordings. I could go on. You know that I love this deck.

The AKAI that I now use is about 95% of this deck, but my brother-in-law deserves a crack at nirvana, too.
