I recently purchased a Sony Minidisc player/recorder model JE320 for $125.00 brand new. For $125 I also got ten free 60 minute MD's, a MD crate, and a Sony shirt. How does the unit sound? Sounds great! I made a deep bass MD with my favorite music and it sounds just as good as the original. The cd's I recorded had info way down to 16hz and I still felt the bass on my Velodyne sub. Most of the music is organ music and the minidisc didn't add any noise what so ever. I also recorded some pop, jazz, and rock music and I can't tell the difference between the cd and minidisc. For the price, you can't beat it. It beats a tape anyday. The unit didn't come with a remote, but my SONY RM-2000 remote works it perfectly. Now I need a portable to use in the car.
By the way, Ovation was where I got it for $125.00. This was in the last week of June.

Strength:

Great sounding deck, perfect for the first time deck purchase.

Weakness:

After a while, it will have a mind of its own. (after 1 year).

This model was my second deck which I use as a dubbing deck. But after a while (at least 1 year), the machine seemed to have an "independent" mind, especially when I record a track or turn the deck off, then it stops the recording or turns itself on. I prefer the MDS-501 but it is seven years old. Sony went cheap on internal components.

SONY MDS-JB920 MINIDISC DECKI have had the sony MD since December 98 and I am very pleased with it. After reading some negative reviews on md sound quality I couldn't beleive the quality of recordings from this unit using coaxial digital connection from my NAD cd player. In direct A-B comparison I could not tell the difference between the cd and md copy even when I recorded treble rich material.

this is sony's cheapest deck. no remote, so entering titles is a big pain. not many features. but the deck is excellent. it gives you about 90 percent of the quality if a cd, but blows away any cassette deck i've ever heard. in an a/b comparison with a cd you'll hear a difference, but on its own it is an amazing device. the sound quality is really very good.

Strength:

pure digital recordings

Weakness:

all plastic constuction

in an effort to check the sound quality some friends and i conducted an a/b/x test. on the 320 made a digital recording from the sony 535 cd player, made w/the toslink. then on a sony 1esa modle tape deck w/a tdk sa-x cassett. used kitaro 10 years track 1 disc 1. as the bell rings only the cassett can be distinguished as the tone of the bell drops. as for tall paul or sandra collins and seb fontaine no one could tell the difference. you can pick one of these up for 130.00 or less and it will blow away even the most expensive tape decks. all i need now is one for my jeep
