Strength:

clean sound, good for recording CD

Weakness:

no back light on cassette well, no remote power control

I bought this product in 1997 and used mostly for taping
my CD collections since I spent roughly one hour on my car
every day and my car has only SONY casstte receiver (which is a very good one).
This JVS deck is a very good transformer of CD music (mostly
pop & rock music) to analog one. Even if I used normal bias
tape (TDK, Maxell), the sound quality is very good in my car, close to CD playback on my another car except some hiss if I turn loud and slight loss of high frequency sound. Using Maxell XLII-S plus Dolby C is a perfect choice for recording CD. The sound is very open and detailed, in most cased you won't distinguish it from its original.
The quick reverse function is good but has some drawbacks. If the tape you are recording has some content till the last dip of the recordable plastic, it won't erase them - just turns around and continues. If you play the tape at a deck having no such function, you will hear your old secret.
Other buttons and controls are big and easy to use. The display window is bright and easy to spot from distance. But there is no clear display of tape type and Dolby setting (B or C?).
The major complains are:
1. there is no back light on cassette well, in a dark environment, I can not easily know the tape position. Although it has a digital counter, but is not as intuitive as directly looking at the tape.
2. There is no remote power control. I am using a JVC receiver so I can nearly control everything but can not turn on or off its power. This is a hassle.
