Price Paid:  $399.00 from Good Guys

Summary:
We have wasted countless hours trying to get our SVR3000 to change channels. We are using it with a Sony High Def satellite receiver. Numerous phone calls have been made to Sony and we truly believe the Sony customer "service" people don't know how to make this unit change channels. There "help" was worthless as three days later, we are still not able to use TIVO. This unit is being returned as soon as stores open.

Strengths:
Very sleek design, fits in well with other components.

Weaknesses:
Does not change channels when used with satellite receiver.

Similar Products Used:
VCR is closest

Review NaN of , from Los Angeles

Price Paid:  $349.00 from Good Guys

Summary:
I have had this recording unit for 4 days without being able to use it due to it's inability to change channels through my exterior digital cable box (A long list of codes is provided for you to keep trying until one of them works to change the channels...none do). Thus far, I've spent countless hours on the phone and on hold, with both Tivo & Sony tech support, to no avail. To make matters worse, each has a different phone number, complete with hellish voice prompts, and when tech support can't figure out how to solve my problem, they refer me back to the other number. After 4 days of this, I learned that had I purchased a Tivo machine in the first place instead of the Sony product, that one phone call to Tivo would have gotten me to all departments necessary to set up the system. To make matters worse, the steps outlined in the Sony Troubleshooting Manuel often have no resemblance to what appears on the set-up screen prompts, so there is no way to logically follow through a process to correct problems. To compensate for the discrepancies in the manuel, which they seem to aknowledge exist, they refer you to their online website. Be warned about using this with a digital cable box. Mine gets returned tomorrow.

Strengths:
Sleek design. Thinner than the Tivo box but with a larger footprint. Easy to use remote control but too small for someone with large hands.

Weaknesses:
Would not recommended for use with exterior, Digital Cable Box. Tech support unable to help with channel changing set-up.

Similar Products Used:
None similar. Only VCR tape recording units.
