Even if price is low, such a player should last much more than 2 years. Now I'll have to pay for repair...

Worked well the first 2 years but doesn't want to switch on any more. Unplugging and replugging does not change anything. Tray makes a strange noise when player is replugged. Mainly used on the weekends.

Quality picture and sound.

Did not last a year and a half.

Player worked great for the first year and then started locking up. The unit is now less than 1 1/2 years old and must be replaced. The unit is mainly only used on the weekends if at all. Player did not last two years.

Yamaha quality standard.

Gets too hot and can't read DVD's after that.

Good quality etc. One thing. When it gets too hot, it can't read the disc anymore ... It usually get hot enough for that after 30 minutes in summertime, and 60 minutes in winter ... So. Don't buy it.

Great sound and picture quality. Multi zone. Dual analogue out puts.

Build quality. Confusing on screen menu.

First impressions were that the case was flimsy and the build quality not what I expected. The DVD tray is very light and flimsy. On first use however I was impressed with the picture quality. Blacks are very black and shadows look real. I have played a number of discs with no problems at all. The sound quality is also brilliant, lots of detail without being harsh. It plays standard CD's well too. Sound quality is great. It has to sets of analogue audio out puts which are good for multiple room set ups. The on screen menus are very confusing and it took me a few weeks to remember what the icons mean. Overall very happy with the picture and sound performance and would recomend it.

Warranty. Excellent picture and sound at this price point. Plays CD-R/RW.

Remote is cheap looking. On screen menu is not at all intuitive. These are minor problems as I am using the remote from my Yamaha receiver, and I rarely use the on screen menu.

A very good unit for the price. Good picture and sound quality. I like the one year warranty, as my previous DVD player (Toshiba SD2700) only had 90 days and gave up the ghost shortly thereafter, and again at nine months.

Supports everything. MP3 CD/R and CD/RW capabilties are very handy. very Easy to navigate menu system.

Fairly picky on ISO Levels for MP3 CDs. Cant have the ISO to relaxed otherwise will not recognise CD. Other than that flawless.

Nice Solidly built unit. Stylish and easy to use.

Simple look, good picture, good sound Easy to operate

No MP3 support

I like this DVD player for it´s good picture, good blacks(they are blak not dark grey), an execelent color definition(when many colors are present on the screen they are strong, red is red, blue is blue, and they don´t get mixed up). However mine after 4 months stopped reading DVD´s and only read audio CD´s. Very desapointing, but now it´s already working fine.

Sound quality, picture quality

On screen menus not very clear.

Sound quality very good, sent via optical cable into Yamaha E800 processor with Arcam 8 and 8p amps to drive the front B&W CDM1NT speakers. Sounds amazing, very crisp. Picture quality is excellant, no errors found as yet, but its only been a week. Also it is a regionless player, very good for the price.

My only beef is that it is not obvious what the on-screen menus mean without looking at the manual all the time, but this is only a minor disadvantage, since I rarely use them.

I just recently picked up this product and usually do night write reviews until after having the product for 6 months.

I will submit another in 6 months and let you know how it goes.

I connected both the Yamaha DVD-S510 and the Toshiba 4109x and sat them next to each other. I ran them both with S-Video and Optical Audio to my receiver.

Here are my notes:

*Remote
--Yamaha: Boring and simple. Easy to use with big buttons.
--Toshiba: Complex with tons on small buttons. Have to turn on the lights to use it.

*Picture
--Yamaha: Very Black. Adjustable black levels. Picture slightly softer then the Toshiba. Colors brighter.
--Toshiba: Not as black. Picture sharp but colors slightly leaning to the greener side.

*Sound
--Yamaha: Broader range. Very Bright and Heavier Bass.
--Toshiba: Flat. Full range from high to low.

*Display
--Yamaha: Orange - Big numbers easy to read from far away.
--Toshiba: Blue - pixilated smaller numbers.

*Artifacts/Freeze/Problems
--Yamaha: Played 18 discs - no problems, no artifacts, no freezes, and no clipping on layered DVDs.
--Toshiba: Player 100+ discs - artifacts on 20%, Freeze on 10%, would not read disc 5%, clips on layering 50%.
(note: I played the same discs that would have problems on the Toshiba, "Matrix", "Thief", "Lawerence of Arbia" and had no problems on the Yamaha. I think this is due to the twin laser on the Yamaha.

*Noise
--Yamaha: Quite
--Toshiba: Loud, you can hear the motoring running and the disc spinning.


Summary:
I have had the toshiba for over 6 months. I have had none stop little problems with it and finaly said to hell with it. I purchased the Yamaha after playing it against 4 other units with the same price range in the store: Sony, Pioneer, Toshiba, Mits.
I ended up with the Yamaha because mainly of the picture and sound. I regret not being able to test the Onkyo, I was eager to try it out.

My belief is that if it works with out bugs and delievers on quality then it is a great product.

Again I have only had this product for a few weeks and so far it has surpassed my expectations. I was hesitant, based on the reviews here. But if you read the reviews carefully, one guy says that it has a great picture and sound, but since he hates the remote and the large face plate numbers he rated it 1 star.
I think he should be rating it higher if he thinks that the picture and the sound are great. Maybe a 4 and subtract a point for hating the remote, but 1 star - IMHO "Give me a Break".

So far: I would recommend this product and purchase it again, but we will see in the coming months.

BTW: Don't buy the Toshiba 4109x it stinks.
