Perfect picture, cool design.

CD support, OSD.

Bought the player second-hand in Holland. Upgraded the
software thru a PC link-cable. That's easy. Modded it
for PAL support, since it's the US version.
Screen quality is supurb ! No black-noise. Cool machine
with beautiful quality. CD sound is to loud, doesn't
sound to good. But who cares, it's movie-machine.

Came out before DTS outputs were widely used

I've had this machine since January of '98 and enjoyed the heck out of it. It's taken every disc I've thrown at it (over 400) with no problems excepte those reported with virtually every other machine. Even "The Matrix" didn't choke it.

As for anamorphic downconversion, it seems to dpend on the disc. I've notice slight problems on some discs, but "Saving Private Ryan" blew me away and no noticeable downconversion problems.

I've been tempted by the SD3109 for its DTS capabilities, but it seems a slightly less solid piece of equipment.

If you can find this for less than $150 and you don't care about DTS, then this machine is quite capable and a very good bargain.

I have had this player for almost three years and it has never given me a problem. It works like a charm. I like the picture quality from the component video outputs and sounds is passed a little better from the coax digital jack versus the spdif output.

It is passable as a cd audio player. If you burn cd's make sure you burn it a 1X and on the darkest disk you can find. Then it will play them. Low quality cdr's just won't work.

I hear they are dirt cheap to purchase if you can find them now. I have enjoyed this player and will continue to use it as a secondary player in my home.

Price, Look

CD playback, no DTS (although neither of these bothered me, that's why I bought it anyway)

I agree with everyone from before that the CD playback on this machine is pretty bad. Also, I did have the same problem with the CD stopping for no reason.

However, for DVD use, since that is what it is intended for, it was better. The picture quality was excellent. I have only store models and my friends older Sony to compare to, but I think the video quality is great. However, I had problems with my unit from the beginning, the audio was cutting out constantly while watching a DVD. So I sent it back. I'm going to look for a newer unit.

Paid $171 total from Ubid for a refurb. I know everyone says they rip you off on shipping which is true. However, I was surprised w/their customer service responded so well to my problems, they are going to pay for my return shipping and give me a complete refund. The toshiba warranty center wanted me to drive two hours or pay to ship the unit myself, and then they would "look at it." Anyway, I was impressed with the way they responded to my problems.

I give a value rating of 5 b/c of price and features, but overall rating of 3 since it is an older unit and I had problems.

currently have problem of tracking and playing both music and movie discs

At first I was very satisfied with the purchase until my unit started malfunctioning. I watched many discs flawlessly until one disc caused it to stop. After that, all discs start to stop after about 5 minutes of play or about 3 tracks later. I've taken in for repair only to be told that it works fine. The only servicing performed by them was the lens cleaning. After playing it again it shuts off again. The service people (not associated with Toshiba) said that it is probably a virus bug. Is this possible? Its not a computer or is it? Anybody with any similar problems please let me know. Right now my unit is being used as a CD player only in my home office.

I was looking to replace my 9 year old Sony CDP-750, so I thought I could kill two media with one electronic device--DVD. Well, I guess if the Sony heads south I'll use the Toshiba, but I would NOT be happy. It's not just the sound; it's all the fiddling it takes to play CDs on a DVD player.
First off, the sound is comparable between the units. But the setup and features are lacking in the Toshiba. I use the optical port for DVDs. But my receiver (Pioneer Elite VSX-09) can't "catch up" fast enough through the optical port to play CD tracks from the start, thereby missing about the first 1/2 second of each track. So, I have to change the receiver to optical off, or change the DVD player setup to PCM, in order to use the standard audio interlink. After that you need to switch the receiver from Dolby to stereo. The Toshiba does not give you much information from its puny display, so you should turn your tv on for more information, but even that doesn't show you how many tracks there are. I could say more....

The Toshiba SD-3107 is a movie machine--and how! The image and sound are spectacular. BUT, IF YOU NEED A GOOD CD PLAYER, THEN GO BUY A GOOD CD PLAYER! Rating as a CD player: 3 discs.

Bought this product from Wholesale Connection in DEC of 96. I have been very happy with the performance of this unit in terms of sound and picture quality.When doing a blind A/B comparison of the analog outputs compared to my Onkyo
Integra CD player fed into two different inputs of my Onkyo Integra A807, I noticed that the bass performance on the Toshiba was much tighter/less sloppy
than the Onkyo. Could it be the higher resolution D/A converter? Only problem I have had with this unit is when playing CD's only, it will very intermittently just stop playing. I have to restart the CD to get it playing again. Has anyone else out there had this problem?

I picked this player up at the Wiz for $299. For the price it is excellent. Sound and video from movies are very crisp and clear. Music from CD however sounds very harsh.

I bought this DVD player back in November '97 and I've been very happy withit. The video playback was very good...I would say excellent except that its
anamorphic downconversion wasnt the best...good...but not great. I just
upgraded to the Sony 7700 last week because some guy was selling his player
for roughly %60 of what it would cost me new. I just had to buy it :)
Of course now that I have a DTS capable dvd player...I'm looking to buy a
DTS decoder like the Millenium 2.4.6 which is on sale at the moment. I still
cant believe that they are selling the "silver" version for %50 less than the
black one. Gee...$400 US for a black one or $200 US for a silver!? At that price
it could be pink for all I care!

Great Picture and has component video as well as coax and optical outs. Easy to use and setup.

Does not have DTS pass through. Remote is somewhat difficult to use if not familiar with it.

Has one of the better pictures I have seen with any Dvd player including the Elite Pioneers and the Sony units. Has good sounding audio and sets up really easy. Only thing I wish is that it had DTS pass. Would highly recommend this unit.
