Review 1 of 55

Price Paid:  $350.00 from online

Summary:
The unit worked fine, but not great for 6 months, then crapped out and stopped recognizing disks. I sent it in and they sent one back that wouldn't stay turned on for over 5 secs. Sent it in again and this one seems okay

Strengths:
hmmm, it works now

Weaknesses:
Toshiba is a crap-ola company for quality control. Remote was designed by a moron.

Review 2 of 55

Price Paid:  $0.00 from Fry's Electronics

Summary:
Very good for a cheap DVD player. Sharp picture. I'd like to do a comparison to a Panasonic RP56 to see which one looks better on my TV just for fun though. If you like a SHARP picture go for it, if you prefer a softer picture you may want to look elsewhere. The sound quality of this player rules in it's price range. Just remember it won't play CD-R's, so get something else if that's important to you. It seems like the glitches only happen on rental DVD's, so I gotta say to some of the other reviewers, "Quit treating your discs like frisbees". Forget error correction, ability to read bad discs, etc. If you take care of your stuff, it'll work better (duh). One more point for some of the complainers - HDCD decoding takes place at the D/A conversion stage. A CD player can only output a digital stream of what comes off the CD - if the DAC in your preamp/receiver can do HDCD decoding, it'll decode as HDCD. If not, it won't. So yes, most likely you will not get HDCD sound from the digital outputs, unless you have an external HDCD decoder. This is true of **ANY** HDCD player, not just this one. All in all, it's pretty decent. If you compare it to a Krell, of course it's going to lose badly, but compared with similarly priced players it's quite good. Other equipment: Pioneer Elite 610 HDTV Carver preamp/tuner (CT-7?) Carver TFM-25 Amp Polk SDA-1C Speakers Sony ES CD Player (don't remember model, plays CD-R's though!)

Strengths:
Very SHARP picture and good sound, HDCD decoding

Weaknesses:
Occasional glitches, won't read CD-R's

Price Paid:  $0.00 from The Good Guys

Summary:
Well, I am generally impressed with the DVD player overall, although I''ve been quite annoyed at the jumpy picture in a blank white screen! I e-mailed Toshiba at their technical service website; they told me to send it in for service. NO WAY! I''ll never see it again!

Strengths:
16x Zoom, HDCD playback

Weaknesses:
won''t play CD-R/W, MP3 CDs

Review 5 of 55

Price Paid:  $225.00 from BEST BUY

Summary:
First of all, mine was one of the bad serial numbers but I
loaded the "patch" available from Toshiba. Didn't seem to affect video or audio playback. Especially the random backwards skipping that I was experiencing on audio CDs.
This happened very infrequently (once every 2 to 3 CDs) but often enough to be annoying. Didn't seem to matter if the CD was old or brand new. I have 2 months left on the warranty and will probably take it somewhere to see if they can correct it. Other than that, the audio quality is superb, especially when playing back HDCDs. Yes, I can hear
a difference. The sound is more natural and less harsh.
The video playback is excellent and I haven't noticed the pixelization that other people have talked about, unless it is a rented disk that is dirty or scratched. The only other complaint I have is with the joystick on the remote, which is sometimes quite clumsy in getting it to go where you want it to go on on-screen menus, especially diagonal moves which tend to be hit-or-miss. Other than that, I really do like the player and its look and feel. If I could get this random skipping problem fixed, I would be completely satisfied.

Strengths:
PICTURE, HDCD.

Weaknesses:
CD SKIPPING, CLUMSY REMOTE.
