Strength:

Good picture quality over time using componant outs. Excellent remote

Weakness:

slight pauses on some duel-layered disks unable to play DVD-R or VCD

For coming out just before DVD took off like wildfire, this has been a very capable machine. It has been coupled with a Yamaha RX-V995 since day 1 and the sound quality has been suberb. I have had this player for 5 years now and the quality is the same since I bought it. Componant outputs are big plus in video quality. I recently upgraded to Toshiba's SD-4800 for progressive scan and DVD-Audio, but the 2108 will still be used in another room. Toshiba makes durable products and has great customer service.

Strength:

Great sound and picture.

Weakness:

nothing major.

Bought this unit in November of 1998. I read about the
"drop out" problems and sent the payer back to Toshiba even though I didn't have a DD-DTS receiver at the time. I knew that I would be buying a new receiver and I wanted to get the problemn fixed right away. As many have complained about, I too had to pay the shipping to send it back. The good news is I got a new player exactly one week after mailing the old one. They sent me a brand new 2108 in the box with a new remote etc. Last year I bought a new receiver a Sony DB 930- a fantastic value- and I've played many DVD's and never had a problem. The picture and sound are terrific. I've only rented a couple of DTS DVD's but the sound quality is slightly better than DD. DTS versions of "The Boxer" and "Saving Private Ryan" were excellent and if anyone doubts DTS they should rent The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over". I'm not a big Eagles fan but the sound was just awesome, I hope DTS sticks around.Nothing but good experiences with this player.

Strength:

This is my first dvd player and probably my last for a long time. This machine is simply perfect for playing dvds. Don't take it from me, look at all the reviews of this product on other sites besides this one. This is the only site i've seen so far that doesn't give it a perfect overall rating. The sound and picture are amazing, and so is the price. What more could any consumer ask of dvd player

Weakness:

none that i can see yet.

i give it a perfect score. Ofcoarse i would of never got it if I didn't find it on ebay for $205.00!!! About $300 less than retail!!!

I have to wholeheartedly agree with Craig about Toshiba's customer support. They are definitely the worst I have ever dealt with. I first went with a 2107 which was returned to the store for a 2108. The 2108 quit and had to be returned to Toshiba who in turn sent back a refurb which didn't work. They then sent the 3109 which I truly enjoy. Of course this whole time (almost eight months) I spent without a player and fighting with Toshiba tech support who refused to even refund any $$$ even though the player they sent retailed for almost $100 cheaper than the unit I purchased and I had to wait eight months for them to get their act together...I wish this site let us review companies on their support basis. Toshiba is a big zero!

I've had the SD-2108 since Nov 1998, nearly a year now. Overall I'm pleased with the player, with the exception of some of the famous glitches common to this unit and similar models. I've experienced the subtitles that won't turn off (in specific chapters of "Emma" and "2010"), I've seen the white flashes in the lower letterbox area. This unit isn't hooked to a DD receiver so I haven't personally heard the audio dropouts, but I'm sure it probably has that problem too.

My firmware version is ROM Version 1.300 R1. (You can see the firmware version by powering up with no disc in the player then hitting in sequence Zoom, 6, 0, 6, Zoom.) I'm about to send this off for the firmware upgrade from Toshiba. Assuming that fixes the glitches I have nothing but good to say about the player. Of course, I'm using a 16:9 TV so I'm not subject to the reportedly poor downconversion of anamorphic discs from Toshiba players.

A very nice low-budget player.

Strength:

Great picture and sound quality

Weakness:

remote could be layed out better and also be lighted

I've owned this player since november '98. It picture and sound quality using Dolby Digital and DTS is terrific. I did have one problem recently when a DVD failed to load, but I cleaned the disc and it worked properly.
I also use it as a CD transport, sending the digital signal to my Acurus ACT3 surround processor. It works very well.
I have not experienced any of the drop out problems others have noted.
On my Sony 46" Rear projection set, a well made DVD looks every bit as good as most movies I see in the theater and my sound system blows the theater away.
I have the Toshiba mounted on a very secure shelf on my wall with soberthane feet underneath it and I placed a marble tile on top to weigh it down.
I use Monster Cable SV1000 video cables and a Canare coax Digital cable.
I'm happy with it.

WORKAROUND FOR KENWOOD RECEIVERS with AUDIO DROPOUTS:

someone else posted this already, but it fixed my terrible problem with dropouts with my kenwood 357 using toslink.
Kenwood 307, 357, and 309 are fairly similar, so I think this will work on these as well.

1 select autosound
2 play movie
3 press input mode until "d-manual" appears
4 enjoy movie with a strong coctail!!!

Strength:

Great Picture and super sound!

Weakness:

The unit could constructed better.

I purchased this unit last November because of the great reviews about its preformance. I have not experienced any of the problems listed as yet. I have just purchased a Sony 333ES and so far, they work great. Reading about all the problems others have had I am running scared!! The performance thus far has been just fantastic.

Strength:

Picture and sound quality.

Weakness:

Does'nt pass a 96khz signal to an external dac.Downconverts to 48khz.

I bought the Toshiba SD-2108 at Tweeter Etc for $399.00, back in 12/98.Toshiba send 5 dvd titles from WB as an offer. The unit is connected to a Denon AVR-3200 using a XLO Pro-100 interconnectors (analog) and with a Parasound Digiflex coaxial cable (digital).A Parasound HCA-1000 amplifier is also used for biwiring purposes.I have not experimented any problem with the video performance of the 2108 so far. The images are pleasent , color rendition is natural and it looks very sharp.AS a cd player, I noticed the hights a litle bright sounding , good mid's & low's.The presentation of jazz , latin and new age music is very live with good pace and dynamics.Instruments sound natural as well as voices. When used with a MSB Link Dac, the sound of 16/44.1 cd's gets better and sound like a more expensive transport. With 24/96 material ,although it downconverts to 24/48,the sound is even more realistic and give you a taste of what we are awaiting in a near future (dvd-a and sacd).Until now ,I'm happy with my unit but I'm sure that problems will come some day. What is a real problem is the bad services Toshiba is providing to the people who need it.If any company beleive that will survive in this industry by selling one item and forgiven its responsabilities as a support to it's customers, it will fail.
