Strength:

It is a unit that allows the user to pass up the previews etc. through chapter forward. Most units will not allow this and put a slash-circle on the screen making you watch the ads. This unit would also let me go directly to the second episode in a multi episode disc like the Sopranos. Neither my Awiai, Panasonic not Sanyo will let me do this.

Weakness:

Electronic board failed at eight months (about 12 discs played), repaired in eight long weeks under warranty. Turntable failed after eighteen months (about 40 discs played) and unit was thrown out.

A two disc full featured medium cost player. This unit was put in a vacation home and played very little. It was unplugged when we were not at the home.

This product is a waste of your money I advise not getting it. The gears are almost all striped but otherwise it worked fine besides all the constant freezing.

Strength:

Great picture quality (even with RCA video cable connection); HDCD support; can play VCDs on CDRW format (despite what the manual says ;) Very reliable as well

Weakness:

no backlit display for remote (which is no biggie though ;) Enhanced black tends to make the overall picture too dark - but again no problem - just leave it on normal ! :)

I just picked up this unit a few days ago and I must say it is one of the best units out. Not only is it reliable and VERY quiet, but the picture quality is outstanding on both Svideo and RCA video connectons. Built in DTS is a plus for those who have receivers that are compatible and the two disc tray is a nice addition. HDCD is a plus as well and even got some of my home made VCDs from home videos playing on the unit on CDRW (Memorex) media (haven't tried normal CDRs yet...) The only minor grips I have with the unit is that the remote does not have an eject feature button and is not backlit, like my old Sony unit had. Also, I have had no luck playing Super Video CDs (SVCD) with the unit, but I'm more in it for the DVD ^_~. Anyway, a GREAT unit - awesome sound and picture, most definitely one of the best DVD players in this price range (and even rivals the higher end units, too!) (picked it up for $245 at mobshop.com w/ free shipping)

All I have to say is THANK YOU to everyone submitting reviews. I have read each one thoroughly and found a way to get the SD1600 very very cheap. The holidays are a time of giving and 800.com really really came through with such a good deal, I couldn't refuse this. Thanks everyone. Keep in mind, do a lot of research on the net before settling for 1 price, there is always a better deal out there, you just need to look. Trust me, 800.com had this listed for 179 and i was able to get the price down to 129, not to mention the rebate from pepsi i still have coming to me which will lower this price yet another $15.

Strength:

Film like picture quality, Parallel video outputs, 4x Zoom, clear distinctive sound and dual trays. Rock solid error correction and playback.

Weakness:

Doesn't play cd-r or cd-r/w. Split second pause on layer change (This is normal for DVD players)

I have had the time and opportunity to evaluate a wide selection of mid-priced DVD players. I have been using the Proscan 8680Z for about two (2) years and have absolutely no complaints regarding picture quality and the Thompson quality error correction. I've since been in the market for a second player.

First let me quickly say that I've never seen players skip more than the Samsung. That's every model I have tested. Hitachi's are very similar to the Samsung and exhibit both freezing and skipping. The Sony picture too soft and a little washed out. It is interesting to note that the Samsung's picture was super clear and that layer changes were seamless on all the movies I tested. Too bad they can't fix the skipping and freezing, otherwise I would have chosen the Samsung 812 (MP3).

Enter Toshiba! When I first evaluated the Toshiba 2200 I was skeptical about the dual tray. As it turns out it proved very useful for my lifestyle. The picture quality on the Toshiba (on both component video & S-Video) was so crisp and clear that the movies appeared to have dimension. The Toshiba SD2200 was connected to my Sony KP-43T70 RPTV (Which in my opinion is the best looking 43 in RPTV in the world).

The sound on the SD-2200 was connected through my Yamaha RX-V496 receiver. I heard things more clearly and pronounced than with other players I tested.

The one feature that is a winner in my book is the zoom. For those of you who prefer to watch full-screen or large widescreen can breasth easy. Other players such as the new Samsung N-2000 NUON DVD player have a great zoom, but the zoom ICON remains on the screen and make it difficult to watch the movie that way. The 2200 can enlarge a widescreen movie up to 3X to almost full screen. It is not pratical to do so (3X zoom) as you'll lose most of the movie. Also once past Zoom 2X, the picture gets a little fuzzy. However, there is really no difference between no zoom and zoom 1X in terms of quality. You can enjoy a larger widescreen without losing quality or too much clipping. Kudos to Toshiba for this fabulous feature.

As for the dual tray, besides being to play 2 dvds one after the other (eg. The Right Stuff) I can leave my favorite audio CD in the machine all the time.

This machine played every disc flawlessly that I put in, including my daughters beat up copy of a Bugs Life, scratches and all, and never ever skipped. Who says it's normal for a dvd to skip once or twice during a movie (Samsung)?

Complaints, not many, but Digital Noise reduction would have been appropriate since the picture quality is so defined in this unit. This would smooth over some poorly mastered DVD movies. CD-R and CD-R/W support would have made this player unbeatable for the price (This feature is avail in the SD-6200). Would have been nice to have a player that does'nt pause on a layer change.

Overall, one would be hard pressed to find a better entry level player with this type of picture quality and feature set. This unit is available for as low as $219 (US) as of this writing.

Strength:

Excellent sound & picture. Reliable!

Weakness:

Joystick on remote can be a bit finicky.

After suffering with the JVC (which turned out to be a total piece of junk) for a little over year, the Toshiba is like a breath of fresh air. It is a bit sad, but just the joy of being able to make it through an entire movie without having the player lock up or pixelize on you is very nice.

The picture and sound quality on this unit is excellent! The sound particularly impressed me compared to the JVC. I didn't do any A/B comparisons, but the Toshiba seems to have a lot better impact (dynamic range) on the audio track than the JVC did.

My only complaint is with the joystick on the remote. Sometimes it doesn't seem to register my clicks. This was also the case on the JVC's remote, except the Toshiba remote works much better than the JVC unit ever did.

Highly recommended!

Strength:

Picture sharpness

Weakness:

Loading errors with new DVD`s,shimmering, remote control.

I bought this unit about 2 weeks ago and I liked the picture right off the bat. After a couple days of using it,it started having problems loading brand new DVD`s.I solved the problem by using the number 2 tray. But it still had a problem of shimmering now and then. When I first started setting up the player,I noticed that the remote is (PATHETIC).This has to be one of the worst remotes I have ever used.I realize I could have got a lemon, but my experience with it made me NOT want another Toshiba product.

Strength:

price with these feature

Weakness:

remote not sensitive

This is my second DVD. I got it in Toronto with a price that I cannot resist. I paid $399 CAN which is a very good deal. Other place listed as $499. Anyone wants to know the place, send me email at andyw@agf.com .

One problem is the remote. It seems the player is not talking to remote smoothly. I have to point straight to its sensor to make it work. Other remotes I have in my house never be such stubborn. Sometimes, I even have to press twice. How can a product made by Brand name will be like this.
Its audio works out wonderfully via its digital output. Its analog seems to suppress signal a bit. Its video output are great which is not inferior than my better SONY DVD. I see it is marginally darker than SONY. But it is not a big deal.
I like its zoom feature very well. If the movie is cinema ratio, I don't have to change my TV setting to fit whole screen.
I found its spatializer is not creating spacious effect as effective as I expected. My Panasonic VCR does a better job. Also its 96k/24hz is working on certain setting only. These throw me back as I expects quality stuffs.
For the price, it is worth the money. But a brand name product should perform good in all aspects. Is it fair to say this? Let another people be the judge.

Strength:

Have had the player for a bit less than 3 months, and so far everything is great. I'm very pleased.

Weakness:

Only what everyone is saying: the remote's a little clumsy to use. Then again, I'm pretty clumsy myself.

I really Love this player. It's more than I'd hope a dvd player would be. I especially like the zoom.

While I watched a dvd rental recently, the picture suddenly went crazy. I removed the disc and took a look at it. It was badly smudged. Cleaned it with my all-cotton T-shirt and -- viola! Beautiful pic again! Inspect rental discs before playing.(Incidentally, for those who have problems with this player, there is a statement in the manual which I paraphrase: "Do not let the player go unused for a long period of time. Problems may develop from non-use." I don't know if this is applicable, but those who've had problems may have bought a player that sat on the store shelf for a while before they bought it. Prospective buyers might want to have the salesperson verify the date of manufacture. Again, this may not be what the manual means. But it wouldn't hurt to inquire.)This player has made me a Toshiba fan.

Strength:

Zoom,Colorstream,picture,sound,built-in decoding,2-disk tray

Weakness:

Somewhat slow to open tray, plus as far as I can tell, you
can't open the tray from the remote(I suppose that's not critical), also, I understand it won't play CD-Rs

I've been totally pleased with this player. I bought all
of my HT components last July including; Toshiba CZ32V61 TV,
this player, a JVC RX-8000V AV reciever, Infinity RS 2000.6
L/R, Infinity RS-3 surrounds, Infinity CC-3 center channel,
Acoustic Research AR-S112PS subwoofer, and Monster cables and connects exclusively. The sound and picture quality are fabulous! Nearly every movie I've watched on this system has been newly-made (taking advantage of the 5.1 surround), and besides the ultimate DVD movie to date (Matrix), The X-Men, Saving Private Ryan, and The Fifth Element are incredible to experience on this system! Even cinematic turds like "Last Man Standing" (shouldn't those barrels be melting?) sound and look good on this HT. I don't know if this model is still available, but if it is or if you come across its successor, don't hesitate to buy it.
