I have recently remodeled my master bedroom and added a home theater system there. I have a new Panasonic CT-34WX50 16:9 HDTV monitor, Denon 4800 A/V receiver, etc. and most importantly, a Toshiba 9100 Progressive Scan DVD player. What a beautiful picture. And the 5.1 sound is equal to the picture. I looked at all the "high end" DVD's, including the Denon 5000 (over $2000 list and NOT progressive scan) and the Panasonic 1000 progressive scan (an excellent machine but overpriced). I bought the Toshiba from Onecall.com along with component and optical Audioquest connecting cables. They sold me the 9100 for $953! The best money I've spent in a long time. Talk about value. My wife, who is not into this stuff, can't believe the picture quality. If you have a TV that accepts progressive 480p, this is the DVD player for you. If you don't have the right TV, progressive scan will not work. Watching a movie on this DVD player is truly a thrilling experience.

I don't understand the posting of the middle (3 star) reviewer. What a lame idiot. This guy obviously is very confused when it comes to the SD9100. He's done nothing but read a bleepin' review @ E-town, and w/o even having seen so much as a photo of an SD9100, he's posting a negative review. This type of review system @ AudioReview should be eliminated.

For your information Mr. E-town reader. The SD9100 does no such reconverting for display of a DVD. But, in fact, the SD9100 has two sets of Component Video outputs...One in standard component video, the other in progressive video. If you don't own a progressive video television, you simply operate the unit via the "component" video outputs. In this format, the display operates identically in performance to the former Toshiba flagship, the SD9000. Check it out...no "upconverting" or whatever else you may have MISREAD from E-towns review.

Oh', lest I forget...I own the SD9100, and a progressive mode wide screen HDTV, and not just taking someone else's word for the capabilities of the SD9100. The SD9100 provides the FINEST performance currently available in DVD production. PROGRESSIVE SCAN dvd provides so much more detail and color to the performance, that even component video takes a back seat to it. The entire picture is so much more 3 dimensional, and filmlike in quality.

Sony has definitely got a lot of catching up to do! TOSHIBA'S flagship SD9100 DVD player is the KING of DVD players, and a fantastic bargain, considering Panasonic is the only other available company providing a PROGRESSIVE SCAN player, and their's is $2500!!!
Folks...I hate to say it...but, it just doesn't get any better than this when it comes to DVD. Definitely worth the additional $500 for the SD9100 over the purchase price for a standard middle of the road DVD player!

Update to my earlier review. Seems the problem was not with the Toshiba, but my television. My hdtv only had a 480i compatible input. The Toshiba SD-9100 requires your set to have a 480p input to interpret progressive scan.

Do your research before buying an hdtv if you're interested in adding a progressive scan dvd player.

About to change hdtv's to a unit that has a progressive scan input. The SD-9100 is operable in either the progressive mode, or component video mode. It is the equal to the SD-9000 in the component video mode. I'll provide an update of its progressive mode once my new hdtv has arrived.

Just wanted to respond to the previous reviews. Take a look at etown.com for complete info on any progressive scan DVD player BEFORE YOU BUY. You must have an HDTV that has an progressive scan input PLUS it must display it as that. If the set converts the progressive input to some other number for display the whole purpose of the progressive scan is lost by the conversion and the picture will be WORSE THAN THE REGULAR DVD OUTPUT because the progressive is converted to analogue, then digitized in the converter and then taken to the screen in analogue, all of this processing creates havic. I am looking for a set that will take it in and leave it alone.

Performance of progressive scan

Bummer...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news...We've all waited over 2 plus years for these progressive scan players to make it to market. I didn't own a Toshiba HDTV, but nonetheless, thought the new SD-9100 would be compatible with any HDTV which had a progressive scan input, as my Samsung HCH5500W does. Well...the short version is...the SD-9100 does not provide compatibility with my set, which does have a built in line doubler and decoder. What gives Toshiba???

Perhaps Toshiba should warn all of you ahead of time that their long anticipated player will only be compatible with Toshiba sets. But, I can't state with any certainty that that is truly the case either, because I haven't seen this unit connected to a Toshiba HDTV.

Beware...All of you folks waiting to upgrade your 3109's to an affordable 5109 progressive scan player...Be certain you purchase it from a dealer that will refund your money in case it doesn't work.

In my case, the SD-9100 only performed to the equal of the SD-9000...Unfortunately, I'd sold my SD-9000 to upgrade to the SD-9100, thus it was a major disappointment to find I'd spent $550 for the new player only to discover I had the identical performance capabilities of the former SD-9000.

As I said...I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Perhaps there is more of this story that has yet to be told. Seeking enlightenment via Toshiba in the upcoming weeks. I'll report back if I have anything of value to share. In the meantime...Don't consider an upgrade to this unit unless you know for a certainty that it is compatible with your television and will project a progressive scan image.

I'll still give Toshiba the benefit of the doubt and provide a 5* rating for being the first to market this player. Considering all the legal hoops they're obviously going through. I don't believe in trashing a products future rating here because I experienced a major letdown. That's the price for living on the cutting edge!

Great DVD player -- awesome sound and picture. You will need a digital receiver and a component video tv to get the full effect.

The best DVD player available money can buy. The only other dvd player currently outputing "progressive scan" video is produced by Panasonic, and they're asking $2500 retail for theirs!
A previous reviewer posted a negative review of the SD9100 based upon his interpretation of an E-town review for the unit. DISREGARD! He obviously misinterpreted the E-town review. The SD9100 produces "component" video like the previous Toshiba flagship model, the SD9000. The only distinction between the two players is the progressive scan optional output for the SD9100. Once you've seen progressive scan video, you can't go back. This is nothing against normal component video, it's just that everything is more 3 dimensional, and filmlike in progressive mode. Colors are so much more saturated...it's frankly, incredible. But, of course, you'll have to own a progressive capable display to take advantage of the SD9100s best attribute...Suggestion: Buy one, and don't look back. Best home theater investment I've made thus far, bar none.

5 stars? Well, if any player is deserving of a 5 star rating, the SD9100 certainly is. Frankly, the SD9100 produces the finest DVD production money can buy, at a reasonable price. Nothing tops it to date!
